Subject: Motivational slump!
I'm finding it harder and harder to make myself get up and get out the door to train. I change up my workouts to break the monotony, so I'm not bored with it. I get plenty of rest, so it isn't exhaustion. It's more of an "I don't care" attitude.

Anyone else feel this way, and if so what are your tools to battle the negativity?

absolutely....I've got 9 more weeks of training before the race...and it's getting really hard to 'want' to go train.  I just keep telling myself that once i get started, i'll be ok....and during the longer sessions, that i'm glad i'm even able to do this much (as some people are not able to even run) and try to enjoy where the journey is taking me.  usually when i get finished, i cross it off the calendar and it means i'm one day closer.
I also searched for some motivational quotes online...there are a few threads posted here with some good ones!
Good luck, stay strong!

I know what you mean. I have some triathlon races on my DVR that I watch... the 'classics'.

Kona from 2004, 2005, etc. I watch those and they still give me goosebumps. Especially the year where John Blaze rolled across the finish, then the following year he watched from a wheelchair knowing he would not live to see another one. Then I think about how grateful I am to go out there and try.

That what gets me going.

X2. You can watch them for free on youtube too - at least 2006, 2007, 2008. 2006 is under 'IRONMAN Hawai 2006' (yes only one 'i'); 2007 is 'Kona Hawaii Ironman (2007)' and 2008 is under 'Kona Hawaii Ironman World Championship 2008'. I've watched all of those at least a few times each and they get me super motivated. Great to watch on the trainer too if you ever ride the trainer this season

If that doesn't work, think about making a big change in your schedule, whatever it may be. Maybe try doing one of your most difficult workouts with a friend, or meeting an athlete-friend for coffee or breakfast before a workout some week to talk about training and try and get you motivated. That would always work for me.

Good luck!

I couldn't agree more. I saw a woman at my HIM last week with "65" on her calf and she was out there doing it. She was really moving too, I heard her cross the finish line about an hour after me. When I saw her I thought 'I hope I'm lucky enough to have the choice to do this at 65.' Be thankful you can and you'll find the motivation.

I watch Kona 2007 whenever I'm in a rut and I cry through the whole thing and it snaps me back to reality. It's the race that inspired me to get into this sport and now I'm out here doing it.

But that said, I hit an emotional rut about every 3-4 weeks and I usually try to go do normal things with normal friends, maybe blow off a workout or too, catch up on sleep and then I get it back. Good luck!

Thanks to all of you. Good points. I typed up a sign and taped it to my fridge that says "You are fortunate to be able to do what you do. Now go out and bust your fortunate !" It has already helped a few times!

As stated above, I often watch the Kona races and that helps a ton.  My favorite motivational add is a nike add. Here is the link, I hope it works.

I got one I say all the time......

No one else knows

meaning no one else knows what you did, how far you ran, swam, biked etc. The only one who really knows is you, and you see that person first and last every day.

I have been working hard since Jan, many days I say to myself why.........

because no one else knows
