Subject: Is this normal for HIM?
Sunday I competed in my first HIM, and while the run portion had temps around 100 degrees I was a bit surprised at the large amount of people who were walking. Is walking all or part of the run more common than running it all?

Depends on whether people  screwed up their bike pacing in a HIM, or how hard/hot/hilly the run is     Some people also race with a planned run/walk.  I've walked parts of all 4 HIMs I've done.  IM is very common to walk

I'd say walking is common in HIM and IM.  Sometimes racers plan a run/walk strategy, other times it becomes necessary for lots of reasons; injury, heat, pushed too hard on the bike, nutrition, GI issues, etc.  Whatever it takes to get you to the finish-line....and yes, crawling is allowed!

100 F is hot enough to make a lot of folks who would othewise run need to walk due to overheating.  At Boise I did not see many walkers at all, but it was cool with the rain and all.  But ya it depends alot on who all is entering and on conditions.

Assume you did Vineman as did I on Sunday.  This was my first HIM as well and planned (and succeeded) in running the full length.  But it was brutal with the heat so I definitely thought about walking at times.  If you train in Northern California, you are not ready for 100 degree heat which I assume impacted a lot of the racers on Sunday

I'd walk too in 100degree heat.

The winner of Ironman China (Henning) walked the last 10K. It was around 110 deg. F.

WHen I did my first HIM, people had said to me to just keep my head down and keep moving forward, don't let yourself see the walkers and let it get to you. The funny thing, though, is that I saw like no one walking. Granted, it was perfect temps (low 70s and the run was shaded), but still. I was really surprised.
