This is kind of in response to a post w/ from Triathlete talk on whether or not you should wear a helmet. I figure since we don't really get to chose what our taxes are being spent on, I thought it would be interesting to see what BTers don't want there taxes to pay for.

Medical bills for people who don't wear helmets.

By "people" do you mean all people or just cyclists? I read somewhere (I'll try to find it) that many more head injuries can be prevented if drivers wear helmets than what are prevented by making cyclists/motorcyclists wear helmets. Are you against public assistance for any head injury where the victim was not wearing a helmet?

No, I'm not against my taxes paying for people in general who have medical issues and can't afford it. I think in life shit happens. We all make bad decisions.

I think a lot of times people make decisions based on things they assume about in life, not reality. Make that person not wearing a helmet your friend or family member, your child who maybe took the helmet off when you weren't watching. That person suffering from lung cancer because they decided to start smoking when they were young and invincible and could never quite quit. If you knew them personally would you deny them medical attention because they made a bad choice.

You can't control other people's actions. We all feel invincible at one point or another. The question is what are we going to do when things go bad. Are we going to pick and chose case by case who to help.

Would medical help also be denied to people injured while driving over the speed limit? I mean, that's so dangerous it's been made illegal almost everywhere.

What about folks who choose to participate in legal but potentially dangerous sports like bungee jumping, hang gliding, mountain climbing, car racing, horseback riding, mountain biking, etc... Even all the protective gear available will only change the odds of injury; serious injury or death is still possible. Many of those sports are done without every protective measure available too. Consider car racing, for instance, where not every class of race car is required to have a full roll cage even though roll cages are proven to save lives.
