Subject: At what point do you need to carry water on the run
I shocked myself last night when I completed a 6 mile / 10k run without stopping to walk.  It was not fast but this was quite an accomplishment for me.  I am doing an OLY in Sept. so this was a confidence boost.  I did not carry any water with me and when I finished, it was the first time I felt my legs that wobbly.  I tend to sweat more than the average person so I'm wondering if that distance is enough for me to consider adding one of those hydration belts?  I know I'll be starting out with even less fluids since I'll lose some during the swim and bike. (although I'll be drinking something like Cytomax during the bike)

I'm guessing this differs from person to person?  I'm a clydesdale too, in case fatties need more water.  haha

For me, any training run over 5 miles I take water (at least in the summer).  I run 3X a week at lunch time in the lovely South so it is always hazy hot and humid down here.   Yesterday I forgot my fuelbelt for a 6 mile tempo run at noon and it really sucked.  For me, I usually hit an 8oz bottle every 25-30 minutes on my long runs.

If your talking about using it during a race...skip the belt and walk the water station and make sure you get all of the cup in your mouth.  You will lose little time walking the water stations.  Good luck!

You'll definitely stir up a discussion with this question. Nutrition has be said to be the 4th dicipline of triathlon. Get it wrong and your performance will suffer. Just read race reports of longer distance races to see the impact of faulty nutrition practices.

Here's a great resource for your hydration question:http://www.hammernutrition.com/za/HNT?PAGE=ARTICLE&ARTICLE.ID=299&OMI=&AMI=&RETURN_URL=%2Fza%2FHNT%3FPAGE%3DTRAININGTIPS%26OMI%3D%26AMI%3D&RETURN_TEXT=Performance%20Tips (OK, the url looks long, but it's a great article. )

I use the recommendations of 20-24 oz of water per hour. I've followed these recommendations for a couple of years now and nutrition is no longer a variable in my training or races, no matter what the conditions.

Depends on the weather for me. Some days when its 90 +99% humidity I take some on a 5k run. In cooler weather I can do 10k with none. If planning anything over 10k, I pretty much always take some.

So I headed out last night at around 7:30 for a long run (10mi).  I took a fuelbelt due to the distance, but I hardly used it.  At mile 7 or so I made myself kill one flask as a preventative measure.  It was very odd to me as I have previously needed to kill both on a much shorter (6mi) run, the cooler temps that late and the fact that it was overcast when I started, kept the body temp down enough that I didn't feel like I needed it.

Long story short, there are more factors than time and distance that will answer this question.

I might be part camel, but I usually don't take water unless I'm going over 10 miles.  I'll make an exception if it's extremely hot and humid.

I ran a 10k with my sister a few weeks back and she looked at me like I was nuts when I didn't stop at any of the aid stations.

I can sweat with the best of them.  Anything over 5 miles I bring some water.  On a really hot day, I'll take some for even for a 5K.   I just feel better, while running and recovery, when I hydrate during the run.

I normally take 200ml for each hour so today will be 1.5 hours so I will take 2 bottles = 400ml.
I just hate getting a dry mouth, so the water is mainly for that

I live in Houston with high heat and high humidity.  I also can't go running very early in the morning, usually around 9:00 so I take water with me on my 3+ mile runs.

normally if I will be running over an hour I carry water...otherwise no.  the exception to this is if I am doing a brick and maybe doing a shorter run off the bike I might take water with me.

Thanks for the replies.  I'll probably try to drink on the bike and just try to get through the 10k portion with a small bottle to be safe.

To the OP, you will probably want to hydrate before the race, too. Normally want to stop taking fluids 30 minutes before swim. Then keep hydrated during the ride and as necessary on the run.

It's personal. Some people can go up to 15 miles or so (me), while others are wearing a Camelbak on a 2 mile run.

During a race there will be aid stations on the run so you shouldn't need to carry anything.

Depends on the weather- if it's cool outside I will run up to 4 miles without water.
If it's hot, I always carry water or sportsdrink, especially here in Colorado where it's dry.

Over 4 miles.. I always carry something to drink on my training runs.

I would not worry about it during a race. If you walk through the aid stations and make sure to drink a full cup, you'll be fine. I normally walk, drink a cup, pour a cup on my head, and start running again.

I sweat a lot -- and in the TX heat on my last long run I used about 30 ounces or so in the last hour....
Not fun...can't keep up with the drinking!

Well I think your legs were wobbly from running 6 miles without stopping... vs running without water.

Each person is different. Some will say they will run 10 miles without any water. Others will not. It's all about what YOU feel comfortable doing.

Here in Texas... when I have to run in heat and humidity... I carry water on anything over 2 miles. Just a handheld water bottle... and maybe it's not even full, but I like having access to water when I want it.

In my Oly I will carry water with me. Why? Because I don't want to stop at the water stations to get water. It's a hassle and I hate drinking out of the cups. I also like drinking when I want to... not when the aid station dictates it.

I dont think so, but do what makes you comfy?

keep a bottle with you on the bike, that will keep you good until you run.  6.2 miles, you souldnt need more than 1-2 cups at the aid stations.....

IMO, the fuel belts are good for really long training runs with no access to water.  why add another gadget in transition when they have water/sports drink on the run?

but hey, I've seen people at 5ks run race with 2-4 bottle fuel belts with gatorade, so do what makes you get to the finish line the fastest....

I ALWAYS carry fluids on the run.  ALWAYS.  It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.  I keep track of my fluid loss rate when running, and try to replace 75% to 90% of it while running.  Your performance suffers as your body loses fluids.  So you need to replace them along the way.

Based on my fluid loss rate, I consume 2 ounces of fluid every 7-8 minutes, regardless of distance (okay, so if I'm only going to do a 1 mile sprint, I won't bother, but that rarely happens).  I carry either an amphipod belt, a handheld, or a Nathan hydration pack depending on the amount of time I'll be running.

In races, I use the amphipod belt as my number belt.  In T2, I snap in an 8 oz flask.  I never have to slow down and get stuck in the crowds at aid stations.  I pass dozens of people who have stopped for water, and very few of them ever catch back up.  And I get to hydrate on my terms and schedule, not those of the RD.

Every article I read from the medical community pretty much indicates you're fine without hydration for workouts less than one hour.  Personally, I don't tend to take hydration along with me unless I'm running 90 mins. (or 75 min. in very hot weather).

For me, anything over an hour, I have some. I usually run where I can stop and buy one quickly, I hate carrying anything.

This is a perfect example of why I said it's a personal thing. We live in the same area and I can go up to 15 miles without fluids, while you need them at 4 miles. I can't even remember the last time I took fluids with me on a training run. I never drink in a stand alone race of 10K or less.

BTW, I sweat a lot too. On a 10 mile run I can lose 4-5 pounds with no drop off in performance in the later miles and I'm not a real big person. I also hydrate well the rest of the day and usually drink at least a gallon of fluids every day. Perhaps people that need fluids on a short run are not doing a good job of hydrating throughout the day. Or not - it's an individual thing.
