Belmar, New Jersey
United States
DQEvents
80F / 27C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 25m 51s
Overall Rank = 227/374
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 24/30
Pre-race routine:

Could not sleep at all before race, I probably got 2 hours of sleep tops. Drove to Belmar with wife, one son and two of his friends. They dropped me off at the checkin and went to get bagels & coffee.
Event warmup:

I stretched a little before the race. When we walked to the beach for the start I jumped in the water for less than a minute to get wet.
Swim
  • 15m 32s
  • 440 yards
  • 03m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

The waves and the current freaked me out and I forgot all form! I didn't keep my face in the water and swim like I have trained. There was an awful lot of cursing by other swimmers, I think mainly due to the surf and water current conditions. I stopped and floated to rest a couple of times.
What would you do differently?:

Swim with my face in the water the way I have trained!
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

Walked for several yards on beach & then jogged/staggered slowly across beach, up stairs, across road into T1. I removed my cap, goggles and wetsuit smoothly. Put on my sunglasses and helmet. Unracked my bike and then noticed others had their race number around their waist. I tried to re-rack my bike but dropped it and almost tripped over it! Struggled to put on belt with number. Finally got the bright idea to buckle it in front of me and then slide number to back (sheer genious!). Age group rank T1 19/30
What would you do differently?:

Put on race number properly after helmet. Don't drop stinking bike!
Bike
  • 35m 17s
  • 10 miles
  • 17.01 mile/hr
Comments:

I was most comfortable on the biking segment. I felt like I was passing many more people than those who passed me. I have to admit, I am surprised my age group ranking was only 24/30 on this!
What would you do differently?:

Get down lower in the drops and/or aerobars. I probably should have done a little more shifting. I should have drank more water.
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

This appeared to go relatively smoothly. Age group rank T2 23/30
What would you do differently?:

I would have selected a bike rack spot much closer to the run exit.
Run
  • 30m 32s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Totally burned out on the run! I was feeling the bagel and coffee/water sloshing around in my stomach. Once I hit the pavement I really got hot. Was not able to run and drink water so I had to stop and drink. The bottom line is that I was simply not able to keep up any kind of pace. I probably stopped 3 or 4 times to walk. I also had to go to the bathroom! My sneakers got wet when I ran along some sprinklers. Shortly thereafter I formed blisters on both feet (I ran sockless).
What would you do differently?:

I would eat and drink EARLY. I would go to the bathroom right before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water, ate the watermelon and oranges that were provided to the racers. I then snuck on the beach and went in the ocean to cool off with my son and his friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience and training. I definitely need to do more bricks.

Event comments:

I missed the awards ceremony because I was swimming in the ocean. If I had stayed I would have met Kristin & Brad (my mentors friends). Overall, it was much more difficult than I expected but I am determined to keep training and improve. Hey, I did it!

Nice work on your first race! Each race is a chance to learn something to do better/differently. Even though the sun wasn't really out, it was warm! Sorry we never got a chance to meet. We'll be back for the tri in 2 weeks in Asbury so we hope to meet you then.

Congrats again!!

Thanks Keri, despite all my griping it was an AMAZING experience and my family is super proud of the "old man"!  I am more determined than ever to improve.  I probably need to shed at least another 20 lbs.

Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone but I have a goal to be competitive in my age group by this time next year.   I am going to do another sprint in 2 weeks and then probably not do another one until October (but then again, you never know ...).

Wink

charlie -

great job on your first race!!!  you've made the mentor group proud.

-tim

ps - the only race I've ever done that required you to wear the race number while on the bike is the ironman.  most other races are cool with just the bike and helmet numbers (i assume this race had those).  that way you can grab the number while in T2 and put it on while running out of the TA.  It'll save you a few seconds

it didn't have either! the helmet number didn't matter, but we were a little worried about bike security with no bike numbers. they had no way to verify it was your bike you were taking. it was still ok to wear the number for the run only though.
