Subject: Goofy's race and a half challenge...

I've run a marathon and a few halfs... but how does one train for the two events on back to back days?

I'm in for 2010 and need to start working on things... but I want a decent training plan, not something I just make up...

I am sure folks around here have done a number of these... any thoughts?

I purchased a plan from Jenny Hadfield, but don't remember if it was through Active or not.  I also got some advise from Jeff Galloway since I am a follower of his run/walk regime.  I only ran 3 - 4 days a week, but did back-to-back long runs on most weekends.  Basically, on Saturday I ran 1/2 the distance of the planned Sunday run.  The longest I did was a 10 miler on Saturday followed by the Tucson Marathon (26) on Sunday.  But we ran the marathon as a training event and did not go full out.

I think the biggest part of Goofy training is going SLOW/Easy for the half.  The things I didn't train for was getting up VERY early three days in a row (also did the 5K on Sunday, but walked with a friend), and the standing around in lines during the day.

I am doing Goofy again the year, but will probably do less back-to-back runs since I am looking toward a HIM next year and need to stay on the bike.  I plan to do run/run one weekend, followed by run/bike the next.  Since I am slow anyway, and have no expectation of going fast at Disney (like to stop and get my picture with the characters), I think the training will be fine.

Bottom line, if you are marathon trained, and go easy on the half, you will be fine for the Goofy.  The race is a BLAST!!!  Hope you enjoy.

This is cool.  Last night I was going through a list of events I'd like to do in the next 3-4 years and the Disney marathon was one of them.  THEN I saw the goofy challenge, and I thought that was a pretty crazy idea and wondered how many people actually did it.  Now that I see people actually do it, I'm thinking I may put that on my target list for 2011.

Keep us informed on how the training goes.  I do like the idea of doing 1/2 of the Big run the day before as part of the prep...that seems like it'd help train the muscles to handle back-to-back events.

You should be able to run both races using a decent stand-alone marathon plan. Hal Higdon's intermediate plan is a decent plan that would work.  The key is to pick one of the races to "race" and just run the other one (I would "race" the Half-Marathon and just try to complete the Marathon in the best shape). Thats if you are trying to "race" and want to be competitive.

You could also look for ultra marathon training plans as these would work also.

The whole reason I am going to be there is that a friend wanted to run the Disney as her first marathon, and I said I would run it with her... I am not looking to "race" either, but my friend is picking up speed as she progresses in her training... If I am going to keep up with her, I am planning on taking the half easy, and then making sure I can do the marathon well...Anyway, when I registered, I realized that this would probably be a once in a lifetime thing... so I signed up for the Goofy.  I worry that someone might have slipped my the stupid pills, just like when I signed up for Black Bear as my first HIM.

I did think of working in back to back long runs on an occasional basis... like every third week or so, say rather than speed work?  and then my fourth week will be a recovery week... just an occasional week with greater than normal mileage so my body is somewhat used to doing the back to back runs...

just a thought... thanks everyone for the comments.

Wife and I are planning on doing this next time around in 2011.  My thought is to just train like I am doing a marathon and take it real easy for the first 2 races and don't expect to be PR'ing the marathon.

I'm starting the Pfitzinger 18 week/55 mile plan for this starting about the first of September.  Other than a du in early October, I am done with tri's for the season so I figured a run focus fall would be a nice change of pace.  Other than figuring out how to aclimate from upstate NY to Florida I anticipate this will get me as prepared as I can be.

I'm signed up for Goofy's for 2010.  I'm also training for a tri or two in the meantime.  I probably should be following a training plan, but I've been running 30-50 MPW in 10 mile increments.  My last tri of the year is going to be on 11/1, so I'm hoping to step up my mileage a bit at the time as I focus more on running.

I lost my first toenail the other day because of this insanity.  I think it's only going to get worse.  :D

When I did it I did a traditional marathon training plan.  Last year my husband did it and modified his plan doing many of his long runs on Sunday with a Saturday run 1/2 to 3/4 the distance he was doing on Sunday.  The biggest weekend planned was 10 mile Saturday with a 22 mile Sunday about 3 weeks out from the race.  Did a few 8 mi Saturday with 15 - 18 mile Sunday.  Mid week was a bunch of 30 min - 1 hr runs or cycling/cross training.  He took an ice bath race weekend after the half and he nearly PRd the Full.  Worked pretty well for him.
