I've never been stopped by a police officer while cycling. I don't know if I'm just lucky, or the VPD realizes they'd never catch me because I'm too fast.

Anyone ever been stopped on their bicycle?

This was all over the news a couple of months ago. There were lots of police out giving tickets. All of the people that I know got warnings and not fines. They were told that they would be fined next month (I think that was July), but only got warnings in (I think) June.

I know people who got warnings for:

i- standing out of the saddle

ii- no reflectors or lights

iii- no bell

iv- hmm, there was one more, I can't remember it.

Later on, it was clarified that astride the saddle means that a foot on each side, not that you had to be sitting, but still I know people who got the warning for standing. Also, the lights I think is 30 minutes before dusk and after dawn, but I know people who got the warning at 5:00pm. The bell thing is only a law in Vancouver, not in any other city.

Of all of the people I know that got warnings, not one of them changed a thing. I think that you could fight anything but the bell.

The Province uses the most inflammatory language too. I remember them saying that cyclists must ride as far to the right as possible, but the actual language of the law is as far as practical. Defintiely two different things and to the average driver reading the Province they take what they say to be right. I did notice more drivers yelling on me to ride to the right or on the sidewalk after that article hit the papers.

Jen, I was yelling at you cause you're HOT! If cyclists were sentenced they way they looked on their bikes, YOU would be in the pen for a long, long time! *whistle, whistle!*

I've been pulled over twice in the past few weeks, "Riding Recklessly" and "Undo Care and Attention" while in Stanley Park and then pulled over for running a red light along Lougheed Hwy. I was in a bike lane with no stop line at a T intersection. I pleaded a case of being to great for the laws that govern the people, I was let off with a warning that others want to be like me and no ticket either time. But more important than breaking laws, did I mention that Jen is HOT?

"Arno Schortinghuis, president of the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, said many cyclists are infuriated by the campaign.

“It’s discriminatory. You would never see a police officer pulling over a car to hand out the rules of the road to a driver.”

Schortinghuis said he believes the campaign is misguided, and would prefer a campaign that addresses both drivers of vehicles and cyclists."

***************************************************************

Hmmmm... let's see... it is "discriminatory" to be given a warning and advised of the law... Okay.. I guess the quick fix just to give people "real" tickets instead..

And as "a campaign that addresses both drivers of vehicles and cyclists." I'm wondering what Schortinghuis thinks the various police traffic sections have been up too all these years.

Let's see, we can ride our bikes on the road, yet we don't have to write a test, have a practical road examination, or insurance. Moreover, the police have stated that police officers with use a high degree of discretion in ticketing cyclists...

What is really upsetting is that I don't know what upsets me more..

- As a motor vehicle owner than I am not being treated as fairly as cyclists.
- As a cyclist that Arno Schortinghuis apparently represents me.
- As a cop that this is the best Province can come up with.

Oh BTW... I never ticketed cyclists when I was in patrol..
