Subject: Is it possible to do a 1/2 marathon........
I have just finished my frist race and it was a 8.5 mile road race on Sept 6.2009 my time was 1 hr 21m 17sec finished 13 out of the 26 females and 28 out of the 85-90 running in the 8.5. On Oct 4 there is a 1/2 marathon I would like to run in, but I am not sure if it is possible or not, I only have to increase my distance by 3-4 miles tops however I will only have two weeks to increase my mileage. I was only training for the 8.5 m run and the half is only an after thought. I did better then I thought so I am now thinking that I could do a half.

Am I being unrealistic or do you all think this is realisable?  Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks all.

Congrats on the race!

I say go for the half. The first time I ran a half mary, I used a training plan that maxed out at a 10-mile long run and I felt just fine doing 13 miles on race day. Get up to 10 or 11 miles and you'll be good. Have fun!

You can probably do it.I'd recommend going to www.halhigdon.com and look at his novice half marathon plan. If you think your base looks sorta similar, and like the mileage of week 8 is doable right now, then go for it!

It's definitely possible.  I did my first half mary this summer on impulse (I know, it was a weird impulse).  My longest run prior to the race was only 8 miles, and I'm a pretty BOP runner too.  I made it fine.  The only thing that sucked was that my recovery time took a lot longer than it probably would have had I done more long runs.  So be prepared to really enjoy a good, solid rest week if you don't get in a couple of 10 or 11 milers before hand.

I agree with everyone else - that's TOTALLY DOABLE! Get in some longer runs, but don't overdo it and injury yourself. Enjoy your first half!!!

I think it depends on how big a stretch the 8.5 mile race was for you.  If you had only been doing 5 or 6 mile runs and the race was a big increase in distance, then I would say you shouldn't do the half.  If you had been doing 8 mile runs in your training before the race, then I think you will be OK to bump your training runs up to 9 then 10 miles or so and will be OK to get through the half.

For my first 1/2, I had run 9 miles on a treadmill and 1 5K outside.  You can do it.

Thanks everyone!!! This gives me the confidence to do my frist "1/2 mary" not bad considering in May I could not even run 10ks I just accomplished that in Aug!!!

btw I used Hal Higdon's training guide for my 8.5 m run I used the 10m plan.

NC Runner - 2009-09-09 7:05 PM I think it depends on how big a stretch the 8.5 mile race was for you.

My longest run before the 8.5 run was two 7.5m runs and to tell the truth I felt okay at the end, I was not exhausted or felt that I could not go on. I could have done another mile or two and I would like to think I could have done 3 more in total, but I really don't know. I guess I will do a 10 mile run this week and see I feel after.
