Subject: Tri-ing a co-ed event?
I got the bug! Finished my first sprint, all women's event, on Sunday.
I finished a little slow, but I finished, and had a swell time.

So I'm considering jumping in with the boys and doing some co-ed events. The number of women only events is slim, to say the least.
But I'm not sure I'm ready. I'm not a competetive type, at least with others.
Anyone experienced this? Any feedback or ideas?

Mucho Gracias.
M

I've only ever done co-ed races. Women generally aren't ranked with the men, so you don' tneed to worry about your times being skewed in the rankings because of lots of fast men (just worry about the fast women). In open water, they tend to send off the fastest, most competitve men first, so you won't get pummelled, plus some smaller races have a "novice" category that makes up the last swim wave. In terms of biking and running, they'll pass you but it's no different than having women pass you. I haven't noticed that during races, the men are mean towards the women or anything.

Really, it's not a big deal at all to do a co-ed race. Plus, it's fun when you DO pass guys... You don't HAVE to be competitive to race with the men. The elites are there to do their thing and aren't paying attention to the rest of us. If you're slow, the fastest people will be way ahead of you and out of your way. Just do it and have fun.

First, welcome to BT and congrats on your success!!

Second.  Waht's the difference and why would you be worried about "moving up" to a co-ed event???  You still have to swim, bike and run - no different than the womens only one.  And you would still be grouped in a women's field and age group.

Yes, there is not quite as much lubby-dubby warm fuzzies that you get at an all-womens event, but everyone is still helpful and encouraging from the top to the bottom of the field, regardless of sex.

Go for it!

I did my first Sprint Tri on labor day and it was co-ed.  What a blast and everyone was so friendly and helpful with questions I had setting up my transition site, etc.

I was even going back and forth with a woman on the bike ride as we kept passing and being passed by one another.  It was a great motivator and she was quite fast! She'd toast me on the downhills and I would catch her on the inclines.  Had to be very careful not to draft on her too when she was in front!

It was quite impressive seeing all the athletes out there competing and made my desire to continue that much stronger!

I did two races this summer, one co-ed and one women's only.  The first was a co-ed in June and there was about 400 people in my race.  Having not experienced any other races I was a bit unsettled with the fact that it was co-ed and so large.  I had a blast and it was really fun passing guys!  My second race was a women's only race last weekend and the atmosphere was really different but equally good.  It was a much smaller race (only 170) and the race overall was a little less organized but it was great to have all the warm and fuzzies that a big group of women doing something together have.

I feel like I prefer co-ed races just because they are larger (around here anyway), and as a result a bit better organized etc.  It also doesn't hurt that there are lots of fit men walking around in spandex!

Women's only events sometimes have a special vibe, but the ones I've done have been huge. I actually prefer to do a smaller, co-ed race.

Go for it!  All you are ever really doing is racing the clock anyway- right?  It does not matter who surrounds you while you are doing it.

Female = (Fe-male) = [Ironman]

You've already done one Tri, so you're a vet.  You'll finish behind some and ahead of some, but the only competitor that can beat you is you.  Enter races and have fun.
