I'm no Jon Krakauer by a long shot, but I was lucky enough to have my account of my recent Ironman Wisconsin experience published by The Pace of Chicago Endurance Sports Blog. If you want to know what's it's like to experience an Ironman from the middle-to-back of the pack, here's my take...

Great write-up. Thanks for sharing--I was thinking I am sorry Scooby couldn't see you finish, but I suspect he did.

Awesome write up!

I noticed a typo, maybe?

"At 7:50, the horn for the pro start sounded, giving them a 10-minute head start on us mortals (as if many of us were any threat to catch them.) Then came our turn.

At precisely 7am, the cannon fired-"

did they start at 6:50?

awesome, awesome race report...one of the best, if not the best, i've read.

congrats, Ironman!

BTW, funniest line in the story for me: "Arms flailed. Legs kicked. I'm pretty sure I even saw someone's gall bladder go floating by." haha, that made me laugh!

Yep, you're absolutely right, the pro's started at 6:50am. Dang, editors! What good are they? (Of course, it wasn't MY fault! )

Wow...very inspiring!!  Thanks for sharing...this helps me set my goals for an Ironman race in a few years (I emphasize: a few years).

Having lived in La Crosse and Oshkosh WI for several years before moving to Texas, I can tell you first hand, those hills are relentless!!!

Great Job Ironman!!

Outstanding!

Rick, that was the most compelling thing I've read to attempt an IronMan.

It was the "friend Jeff" part that made it so compelling...or maybe it was the "Hillary Biscay" part...or maybe the humor...or maybe...ah heck, it was just a great story. Congrats, Rich, but no great surprise at the honor...you have a gift.

I worked Cap Square aid station from 7 to midnight.  I remember you coming through - not a lot of donkey jerseys out there.  Congrats on your finish!
