Subject: Lonely Jew on Christmas

Any other lonely Jews this Christmas?  How about an informal competition of who can log the most hours and/or eat the most Chinese food on Dec 25th?  For conversion purposes 1 hr training = 1 Junit (like a Jew-unit...work with me here) and 1 lb of Chinese foot = 1.5 Junits.  I'm aiming for 4.5 Junits.  I might consider going to the movies as 0.5 Junits if anyone pushes for it and skiing a full day as 2 Junits (half day is 1).

If more than 3 people post their results, I'll search my house for what will probably be a really, really awesome (i.e. bad) prize for the winner.

Goyim need not apply (just kidding, you can apply too, but the spirit is for non-Christians or those who are lonely on Christmas, Jewish, Christian or otherwise)

Can a non-practicing gentile participate?  My wife and yutes will be out of town and I'll be home alone.  I do have an appointment to get drunk around 4pm but I'll be free from around 10am til then.

Why does ``On Moisha, on Herschel, on SCHLOOMOE! Hannukah Harry is here!'' come to mind.

Yeah not Jewish but will spend parts of Christmas alone. Then off to the only open bar in the city, which happens to be right next door to my condo. Merry Christmas to ME!

Yes, good point.  I revised the OP to encourage anyone lonely on x-mas to submit their totals.

Normal training day for me. I put in a travel embargo from late November to March due to the weather a couple years ago (and watching the news today feel vindicated, yet again, for doing so). So, I'll be hanging out solo and just following the plan. Also, family's last name is Rosenbaum. So, we're kind of grandfathered in, despite not being a member.

Based on my training calendar, I should only get 2.5 Junits pf credit since its a recovery week. I'll be cooking a chicken and stove top for dinner in lieu of Chinese. So, doesn't sound like I get any credit for that.

So I'm in a Chinese restaurant the other day and I ask the waiter, are there any Chinese Jews. He replies, "We have Orange Jews, apple Jews, cranberry Jews, but no Chinese Jews!"

Are non-theists welcome? I'm planning my 3rd annual Christmas morning mountain bike ride with a friend that will last 4-5 hours. Depending on timing, weather, and any mechanical issues, it could also include a 1-2 hour trail run. What's the Junit conversion factor for that?

PS - Ahhh, Hanukkah Harry. I can't believe its been 20 years.

My kids are 1/2 jewish, so do the two of them together count as 1 junit?  I think the movies definitely has to be a part of the measure - I think in fact it is more traditionally a part of the jewish christmas than skiing is.  We are jews.  We don't ski.  (The late great Buddy Hackett had a hilarious riff on this years ago - when the german ski instructor was asking "Do you ski" but it comes out as "Jew ski"...maybe you had to be there).

I'm Christian and we always went to the movies.  Once you get to the point where you don't have many toys to play with, going to the movies is great.  I always felt bad for the people that worked there though.

slightly ironic b/c I've been feeling very lonely lately at the office, where I'm the only non-Jew and everyone leaves mid-day (if they come in at all) for that candle lighting thingy...

This has always confused me. I understand how someone can be half of a ethnicity, but half of a religion? I understand the parents might be of different religions, but you can't practice both and actually be devoted to a faith....

So is the whole weekend a time of worship? In my mind you can't be half a religion, you either are or you aren't.

Sorry for the tangent, also to the OP, great post.

Being jewish is both a religious practice AND an ethnic identity (tastes great AND less filling).  Many jews are in fact secular, or agnostic, or buddhist ("jew-bu's").  One of the controversies in Israel now is how big a role the more conservative and orthodox arms of judaism are playing in setting laws in what is a mostly secular society.  And so pride in judaism has more to do with the ethnic elements (and food) than with the religious practice (and food). Or as my one daughter says - "we only celebrate holidays where you get something".

Although I am not religious, one of the things I like about judaism is the linkage through our holidays to our heritage and history.  Even without knowing my specific ancestors, I know they celebrated the same things in much the same way I do.  Or as a friend of mine describes most of our holidays - "Someone tried to kill us.  They failed.  Let's eat!"

Well, I'm Christian but will be spending the holiday with a Jewish friend skiing.  Might get in a run before skiing.  But I have to ask, how come skiing doesn't count at the same rate as other training?  No Chinese for me, I don't like the stuff.

Rip off South Park??? I would never.  Just like I never sing What Would Brian Boitano Do? to pump myself up before a race.

I see. Since the face and terms of PC are always changing I would think it would have at one time been classified as "cultural" not "ethnic," who knows. The "Someone tried to kill us. They failed" That's an awesome lookout for the holidays

Ethnic is a more appropriate term, since it also implies some genetic things.  And there are some disorders, as well as medication responses that are affected by ethnicity (for example Tay-Sachs affects certain jewish populations, even if you no longer practice any religious observations). Culture is more of the traditions and "ways of doing things", which is also a part of judaism, but obviously can get lost easily.

HAHAHA, love it! I'm a Christian, but the Old Testament stories are the same for all of us - I'm doing a bible study on Esther right now, actually. I actually have a lot of respect for my Jewish friends b/c although we don't agree on the whole Jesus thing, there's still a lot of stuff we can share in terms of faith and tradition. Plus, the food is always fantastic.

Sorry, I love skiing, snowboarding, skiblades etc (well, when I'm back up in NH, MD is seriously lacking) too, but its just not as continuously intense a workout as a straight run/bike/swim/lift session, so you gotta do more to count the same.  Maybe if you post HR data from skiing I'll reconsider...

So, I'm a member of the Tribe but Steve is Lutheran.  We exchange a gift on the first night of Hanukkah and gifts Christmas morning.

We will be working out and having sushi for dinner.  Does that count as Chinese  since it is still in the Asian family?

Did the obgligated Christmas thing with the inlaws 4 hours away this past weekend.  So part of Thursday, all Friday, Saturday & Sunday are free for training, skiing, skating, sleding & snowshoeing.  I don't let the kids sit still with noisy toys & movies very long.

Do you have a conversion/point for other strenuous activities?

Skiing - If I am skiing moguls you have to give me more than 1 point for a half day

Sleding - The hill is about 80' of climb in snow with boots on, you have to give me something for this.

Skating - I do laps around the kids playing hockey or play hockey myself, not all that strenuous

Snowshoing -

My closest Chinese food is 30 miles away, so I will have to get points the hard way.

HR data wouldn't equate to a s/b/r but certainly would be greater than a lift session (for active time, not counting chairlift time which I would of course omit).  If you're a leisurely skier I would agree but I ski hard and fast, bumps, powder (if and when available) and I hurt more after those days than I ever do after a swim/bike/run.
