Subject: Triathlon in Alaska?
So I just found out I got orders to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. It is near Anchorage. Looks like my tri season just got cut in half. I'll be headed there in May-June this year.

Anyone from Alaska doing tri's?

My point and case.

I hate to say it, but triathlon is going to become my secondary sport. Maybe I can use my endurance for hiking and mountain climbing?

Mt Everest is nearby....

You won't be doing tris anymore.. You will be too mesmerized that you can see Russia from your house.

You are lucky!

I know you are hitting Anchorage area but this blog is out of Juneau and she is always out training:

I love Juneau Jill!  Talk about hardcore biking.  When she does the Iditarod bike race I'm glued to her site.

You can always fly down to southern Alaska (Seattle area) and do some Tri's.    Does the USAF still do Space A flights on MAC Flights....

Showing my age with the mention of MAC.

I visited Alaska last year. What an awesome place, you'll have plenty to do even if it's not tri.

x2 on Alaska being awesome - there is so much great hiking (i.e. trail running) out there - stay in shape, tri's will be around when/if you move back to the lower 48.  Like Spence said, Seattle is only a 3.5 hr direct flight away from Anchorage, so for bigger events (70.3?) you could fly down. . the drive would take a bit longer

I feel like Jill Homer (Link in my Logs) could drive me into the ground, even if she only had 1 leg.

She's pretty hardcore.

For the Tri scene, yea, not sure..... but either way, good luck and keep training!

Any idea how long you'll be there?

I was stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage and there are actually plenty of triathlons to do in the summer. The Alaska Triathlon Club is pretty big and holds clinics, training events, etc. I got my start at racing triathlons in Anchorage. There are also running races, swim meets (nice pool at Elmendorf to), x-c skiing is big and the Artic Bicyle Club that puts on road races and runs a time trial series on Ft Rich. Anchorage is an active city. Plus you have all that sunlight during the summer for training. Not so much in the winter but if you x-c ski you got lit trails all over the place.

There was something like 20 folks from Alaska at Ironman Arizona this past year. The youngest guy was from Alaska and was doing it with his Dad.  Mike R. tried to get them to say they wanted to stay in AZ for triathlon reasons, but they were pretty firm Alaska lovers.  So, you wouldn't be the only one in the state doing them!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll def check out that blog, but it seems I will have plenty to do to stay fit, and I might just keep tri season to about 3-4 months long. It will suck, but I think I will be a more well-rounded athlete.

I've got a friend stationed at Ft Lewis in WA, and he does tri's too, so maybe that would work out when he isn't deployed. It is looking like I will be there for 3 years, but if I love it, then I will stay after I get out.

Also, I realized I said Mt Everest is nearby, I really mean Mt McKinley.

The USAF still does Space A. I plan on using it a lot to visit friends in Hawaii and WA

There is three tri's that I know of in the Anchorage area.  There's also lots of running races.  It is a short season though.  You'll survive your winters much better if you find a way to be active and outside.

You're probably either going to love Alaska or hate it.  There doesn't seem to be many opinions in between.  After you get out you could have the best of both worlds like me and spend summers there and winters somewhere else.
