Do you venture outside of COJ and post valid information or offer advice?
Have you felt welcomed outside of COJ?
Have you been impolitely "shot down" by an elite member (and by "elite" member I mean that they may not have a high post count) ?
Have you felt that you received better information from a person with a high post count or lower post count?
Who was more friendly, high post count vs low post count?

Come to think about it, the post count really shouldn't matter anyways, it's the individual that responds that should be noted.

I feel that I'm treading on thin ice on this, but, something made me start to question things.
Thanks to those that respond, and for those of you that don't, I don't blame you for not wanting to.

My post counts used to be almost all tri-talk and gear reviews/info. And now that I'm no longer racing, I've felt that my input might be... not as well received. Yes, I've been poo-poo'ed by others at times (won't name any names) because I tended toward a more "instinctive" form of training, which worked very well for me.  But I also have a pretty long-in-the-tooth history with tri (my first was in 1984), so I've seen a lot of changes over the years, and can offer some advice (especially on the bike) learned through a lot of trial and error (the only form we had back then) and also from my bike racing days.

Now? I'm almost exclusively on COJ.

Well, there is a post in another forum area that provides my and others responses, if you care to read the whole thread.

This thread provides a different perspective.

I like it in CoJ because its a place to hang out and laugh, kind of like going to the bar, or well, coffee house. There is only so much serious tritalk that I am going to process in one day and until I run my first tri, I figure I don't have a whole lot to add there. I don't see the big deal with post counts, although I'm the FNG in TAN.... actually I'm under 20 post i think, am I allowed to reply in this thread 1TT?

Anyways, it is pretty funny, the post count, I have to say I feel safer hanging out in CoJ, but at the same time I wonder if I will get looked down upon when I venture back to the "real" tri forum.  But you know what, I'm here to have fun, hopefully make some friends and learn about tris so  i don't care too much. As far as information, its just information and it will be clouded by the posters own individual experiences. Yeah you can learn from it, do I read something and then look at their post count? No, I figure if it is good info others will agree and if it is bad they will disagree, or it will fall in the middle. Regardless of where the information falls, I consider the information logicaly and try to make the best decision for myself. Its called research and thinking, not just listening to someone because they have X number of post.

Personally, I think they should eliminate the post count, especially considering how big of a deal it has blown up to be, don't they have some other kind of status for members that have been in the forum for a while? You can also see whether they are active members or not. Not to mention, active members know when a FNG shows up.... so really does post count mean anything? i don't know, does talking make you finish a tri faster?

phil, i usually glance through the RSS feeds a couple times a day in the Tri Talk, Illinois and Triing for Weightloss threads and read the titles that catch my eye and once in a while I post something but LEARN a lot by reading some of the various posts and advice given.  I sometimes give advice if i feel i can contribute and I know what i am talking about.  I do so enjoy the personal attacks that take place in the tri training posts when various training philosophies interact and won't even begin to listen to others.  Makes for a good time waster on those slower day.

Since i work from home alone I actually enjoy COJ though and most of my posts are usually there...it sort of gives me the coworker banter that i miss out on since starting my own business.

such as....  round wheels vs. square - which are faster?

and my personal favourite.... Vega vs. Pinto- what's best for carrying tri-gear?   (wasn't this when the Pinto first exploded onto the scene?)

    1984. Wow.

Like briderdt I started before there was much of a database on technical training  (1986), and after returning to the sport realized my knowledge was somewhat outdated. Nonetheless, I still post on tritalk, the intro thread, and the health/injury thread when I feel my input could be useful.

I haven't paid attention to the post counts, so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I haven't posted much at all and found that there a small few that are not very friendly and ended up making me feel that I shouldn't be in this section.  Too bad,,  I can be a fun person at least I think so.

I will be very cautious from now on about where I post and try to make friends. I think I will feel safer being a supporter or cheerleader for others than to try to join in other discussions.  Foot in mouth

I had no idea how controversial post count was. That the topic could even get to page 2 is amazing to me. Once I figured out how it worked, it became not a lot more relevant than people's signature line. It isn't hard to hang out here, read some threads and see who knows their stuff.

I hang out in COJ. I'm not exactly the most dedicated triathlete, so have little to add to serious tri training conversations concerning intervals or power meters and such. It's way more fun to debate melon presses and ponder what I've learned this week.

I thought it was really funny that some folks in the other thread wanted to seperately list (or eliminate) COJ posts from the 'real' post count. "Don't chat with your neighbor! This is serious here!!!!"  Seemed a little OCD to me. Oh wait. We're triathletes. n/m
To actually answer the questions:
Yes, I've ventured out.
Yes, mostly welcomed.
Don't think I've been shot down, but I don't always remember to go back to threads I've posted on and sometimes can't find them when I want to.
I don't remember the post count of people who have given me good info. I more recognize names. If I recognize the name though, they probably have a high post count and I've seen them around a lot.

1stTimeTri - 2010-03-02 9:48 PM Do you venture outside of COJ and post valid information or offer advice?

Yes.

Have you felt welcomed outside of COJ?

Generally yes, but other times....eh.

Have you been impolitely "shot down" by an elite member (and by "elite" member I mean that they may not have a high post count) ?

Actually, I have had worse run-ins with people asking for advice than from "elites".  If you ask a question then get an answer you don't like, that does not give you the right to belittle me or my advice.

Have you felt that you received better information from a person with a high post count or lower post count?

Couldn't say one way or the other.  To be honest, I know names and avatars, not post counts.

Who was more friendly, high post count vs low post count? Come to think about it, the post count really shouldn't matter anyways, it's the individual that responds that should be noted.

Exactly right, post count should have no real bearing.  However, some people feel it does, and that is their choice.  I choose not to pay attention to that.

There are people on this site I tend to avoid.  Our personalities clash, and I disagree with either their approach or their advice.  But that's nothing more than my personal opinion of them, and I deal with it.  I do not let those individuals prevent me from posting.

I will say that I have taken breaks from this place for numerous reasons, chief among them was a general shifting of attitude towards hostility towards the more experienced people.  I post in CoJ very rarely at this point because I choose to avoid the topics here; I have lost interest in most of the debates.  Also, I think the topics tend to be far too emotional and get people upset.

I will add one more thing here.  I do not like the use of your word "elite".  I have seem that word cast around this site far too often in the past, and it almost always takes on the form of a pejorative.  Just because someone is faster than you does NOT give you the right to be dismissive of that person, just as it does not give him or her the right to be dismissive of you.  If you do not like the advice I give, speak up.  If you do not like the tone or manner in which I give it, send me a PM telling me; I cannot hope to change if I do not know I need to do so.  If you do not like me as a person, for whatever reason, that's your issue, not mine.  If you want to tell me so, fine, I will graciously accept your criticisms.  Otherwise, don't read my posts.

frequently I venture outside of COJ.  I'll post on tritalk, injuries, IM, race reports, even the new ultra forum and I have never run an ultra. i've been a BT member for almost 3-years and when i first discovered the site I felt I could maybe learn a thing or two but also add some input as I have been doing triathlons probably far longer then most of the other members.  I'm 49 and strated running at the age of 24 and did my first tri at the age of 27.  I don't get into all the gadgets and gear that many other triathletes have but I do know how to train.  I think there are some experienced members that can be pretty direct in their opinions.  I don't feel that they come off across as elitist...just maybe strong and direct in their opinions.  I don't always agree with them but they some offer some good advice at times.  I think Scout is one of them.

As far as post count, I never thought anything about it until lately when someone started the thread.  I would agree that it is misleading to a new member as someone could have 100000000000 posts and has ittle triathlon experience.  myself, I've been around long enough to know most of the people offering free advice.  before that I clicked on their logs or race reports just to see if the had any credibilty.  post count really doesn't mean anything to me.

As far as COJ, I use to avoid it but it grew on me.  some of the discussions I find interesting.  And to be honest, runner/triathete is just a small part of who I am.  I am also a husband, father, concerned citizen, and sometimes an a-hole...lots of good topics get discussed on COJ.  unfortunately, sometimes just as a topic gets interesting...the thread gets pulled!

I don't know how to respond. With your post count hidden I don't know if I am responding to a newb or an elite.

But I guess it doesn't matter because either way I'm going to respond like an Eh Hole.
