| Master 1471 Dunedin | Subject: RE: Black Bear Olympic Triathlon : Official Thread I'm usually on the IM Lake Placid thread and they are saying Black Bear (HIM) and Harriman Tri have much more challenging hills.  I had a friend do the Black Bear HIM last year and said it was brutally awesome, and a friend did the Olympic the year before that and said she was thankful she only had 24 miles instead of 56 on that route! |

People were saying on two of the hills it is faster to walk/run your bike up than to try and ride. I'm trying to decide if I want to talk my old road bike with the granny gear, or my new tri bike with no granny gear. | |

| 152 | Subject: RE: Black Bear Olympic Triathlon : Official Thread Hey guys, I did the inaugural BB sprint and did the sprint my following year (at that point it was either sprint or HIM). I also have ridden the course with my tri club. It is hilly but one you ride it once or twice, its manageable. I can tell you this: if you can't ride the course on your bike, drive it. that way you can see where you need to shift, hard turns, etc. It is invaluable. I did that the first year and thank god. No joking, there were half a dozen people laying on the road and off their bike after they came up on a huge hill and couldnt shift quick enough. And that is what I witnessed, forget the horror stories from everyone else! But honestly it really isnt that bad if you do some hill training. If you are a flat rider, its going to be a long day! Larry Redrow and his wife Michelle and CGI racing are top notch! I have not been around any other triathlon or road race with the level of professionalism that they have. They are the best. |

| Master 1572 Baltimore | Subject: RE: Black Bear Olympic Triathlon : Official Thread Does anyone have it mapped on mapmyride.com or gmap-pedometer or something that gives the elevation profile (I really like mapmyride for this)?  I can do it pretty easily, just seeing if its already done. I can't wait, love the hills! My new bike is a compact chainring and I got the 11-25 cassette so I think I'll be ready for anything! |

x2 re: switching gears. I did the HIM last year and a year later I still have nightmares about this race. I got caught on one nasty hill and didn't switch gears fast enough and my chain came off. I put the chain back on, but I had to walk my bike up the hill. On the second loop, I swear I thought about pushing my bike up some of those hills. I probably would have gone faster!

| Veteran 204 | Subject: RE: Black Bear Olympic Triathlon : Official Thread Hmm...I'm in the process of buying a tri-bike and will have it and be fitted before this race...but now I'm wondering if maybe I should just stick with my road bike for this!  Only thing is, my new tri-bike is soooo much better of a ride generally and my road bike is pretty low end, but it does have a triple! I might just need to find another race for my new tri bike before my A race in July. Seriously, I'm up for a group pre-ride... Edited by jessm 2010-03-28 9:01 AM | |

I thought I read that the previous HIM was 2 loops but I am not 100% sure since this will be my first time at Black Bear. http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/pa/lehighton/984126962717318443 |

I'm not doing that one this year, but I did the sprint 2 years ago, and even with that the hills were intensive. I would go roadie rather than tri bike, unless you are a REALLY strong climber. |

| Veteran 263 What used to be the country, PA | Subject: RE: Black Bear Olympic Triathlon : Official Thread I've ridden up there several times; I would agree that there is definitely an advantage to a pre-ride or two; you can figure out where you can cannonball a descent to help with some of the ups, and get a feel for yourself how the course really is. That being said, if you're used to doing most of your riding on a trainer or flying on the Schuylkill River Trail, I would recommend venturing out to the north or west into some not-so-flat country for a few long rides this month. | |

Not bad? Given the winter we had, I would plan on rough and be pleasantly surprised if the road crews are ahead of schedule. |
