Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Aggressive Couch-to-5k Training Group: Aug-Dec 2010 Hi everyone! I'm Jen. I used this program in 2005 to start running. Up until then, I'd never been a runner. Just want to say that it's a great program! I've recommended it to many people as a way to start running. I'd be happy to answer any questions! Good luck! |

Regular 87 Madison, MS | Subject: RE: Aggressive Couch-to-5k Training Group: Aug-Dec 2010 My name is Lucas, I got talked into a supersprint tri this spring and fell in love with it. I have never been a runner so I started the couch to 5k program, I am now 12 weeks in and can run a 5k in under 30 min and my distance and speed are getting better by the week. I have never been a runner, in fact up until a few weeks ago I had never ran 2 miles straight in my entire life (just sprints mainly growing up for football and baseball). |

New user 21 El paso, texas | Subject: RE: Aggressive Couch-to-5k Training Group I'm Mickie! I've been lurking on the site for a couple of months. I am registered for my first tri in October. I've been using this plan for the ruining and am seeing progress. I'm slower than Christmas but am up to the 2 mile mark with 6 weeks to go till my race. I'm a little worried because I am so slow and am wondering if I should be working for more speed or continue building away for endurance even at a snails pace? I'm talking about a 14 min mile! I've never been a runner so even this much is progress for me. I have worked primarily on weight loss for the past couple of years and am now pretty much at my goal weight - having lost 125 lbs. So the whole fitness thing has been an ongoing journey for me. The swimming is ok - I swim about a 2 min 100 yrd for my race distance of 1/2 mile. Biking is so so. Takes me about 50 mins for 12 miles. All advice is much welcomed! |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Aggressive Couch-to-5k Training Group Hi Mickie! Welcome!!! At this point, I would focus more on building your endurance than building your speed. You'll find that as you can run longer, you'll start to run faster at shorter distances. Don't worry about your speed! What's important is that you finish the tri!! Does that help? |

New user 21 El paso, texas | Subject: RE: Aggressive Couch-to-5k Training Group Thanks Artemis. Yes it does help! That's pretty much what I've been doing -just plugging away at the time amounts in the training program. When on the treadmill I try to raise the speed for short intervals every 3 or 4 mins as I run. Outside I just plug away! But I am able to plug longer and longer! |

We all wonder whether we should be doing speed work in our first season, so you are not alone! As Artemis said, it is very important that you stick with working on your endurance. At a 14 minute pace, you are doing just fine and finishing a 5K at that pace is perfectly acceptable for someone new to running! There wil be plenty of people slower than that. As your endurance improves, you will naturally begin to get faster, but doing speed work now could lead to injury. The same goes for cycling, btw. It sounds like you are doing great with your training and will have NO problem with your first triathlon. Are you using a plan for your swimming and cycling? Jessica |

New user 21 El paso, texas | Subject: RE: Aggressive Couch-to-5k Training Group Thanks Jessica! I think I'm doing ok overall. I have been following the run focussed sprint plan as far as scheduling workouts. I try to get 3xs runs, 3x's bike & 2x's swim a week. For the most part I've been able to stick with this for about 12 wks. As for the content of the swim & bike workouts, I've incorporated workouts from different plans, alternating longer rides & swims with technique focussed workouts & shorter speed focussed workouts. The bike has most of all been just putting in the time since I am new to biking as well as running. I'm just learning how to use the gears to my advantage & trying to build some endurance. I bought a very vintage road bike off of Craig's list & it is working just fine for now! I have just started doing some short bike/run bricks. I haven't done any swim/bike bricks yet & that will be harder logistically as the pool is far from where I live. But I'm sure I'll figure something out. Have really been enjoying myself & that is the most important & amazing part! I can't say that I've always enjoyed exercise! |

Swim in your tri shorts, then get out of the pool and get on the bike immediately for the ride home. And most excellent on the enjoyment! You will find that after a bit, you REALLY miss the exercise when you take a couple days off. John |

New user 21 El paso, texas | Subject: RE: Aggressive Couch-to-5k Training Group Congratulations on getting started Mary! This program has worked well for me. I had never been able to run much at all even in my younger years & am amazed that I am now making progress! There have been a couple times that I have skipped ahead in the recommended times but most often I found myself extending a particular workout for an extra day or two when I didn't feel quite ready to move forward. I have found that it is really important for me to stretch a lot & use ice when needed, and my knees made it very clear in the beginning when they needed the ice! But that has gotten better as I have moved forward. Enjoy yourself! |

New user 21 El paso, texas | Subject: RE: Aggressive Couch-to-5k Training Group I have a question about the bike to run. I am having a really hard time running off the bike when I'm doing bricks. Are there any training exercises to help or is it just a matter of needing better fitness? My calves and the arches of my feet tighten up and of course my legs are are like rubber. I can deal with the rubber legs better than the tight calves, shins & arch pain. If I walk an 1/8 of a mile or so it seems to help but I really would rather not walk. |
