Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Really? No thread started for this race yet? C'mon...it's only 31 1/2 weeks away!!! :) Seriously, though...my wife and I are both in for this...2nd HIM for her (I've done a couple IMs). Coming out from SoCal...first time shipping bikes to a race...the whole nine yards. She's a native Mainer and has quite a number of family members nearby, so--hopefully--lots of support. Her sister-in-law and her nephew's girlfriend have both been talking about signing up for the sprint and making it a big family weekend thing. |

It will be my second HIM (first one was Timberman last year and was a complete disaster for me). Looking to redeem myself up there this year. Off to a slow start this winter but hoping to kick it up a few notches in the next couple weeks. Getting some skiing in as well (good cross training for those quads!) Hoping to NOT be in the last of 17 waves this year. |

First was that fiasco Miami 70.3, so bad that WTC paid my Timberman registration fees. How hilly is the bike? I have no hills on which to train in very flat Va Beach. I would say it is fairly hilly. Not the worst hills ever but a couple of the hills had me in my small chain ring wondering when it would be over. Most of the hills were in the first 10 miles and last 10 miles or so. The middle 20-30ish are flatter (if I remember correctly). I can't help you with the training for hills without hills part as I can drive 25 minutes to get to some hilly terrain to train on. If you have the chance to ride (or at least drive) the course ahead of time it is helpful. I wish that I had been able to do that but I didn't. |

Extreme Veteran 490 Higganum, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread elbi999, I did 2 sprint tris in 2009 and 5 sprints and 9 off road tri events in 2010, so this year is a big year for me. I signed up for an Olympic in mid June that is also pretty hilly. So far I have been training as much as time permits. I really can't wait, I'm enjoying the journey and the destination. |

Extreme Veteran 494 Morris County, NJ | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread elbi999 - 2011-01-14 10:57 AM Weren't we supposed to try and meet up last year? I think we were in the same wave? Well this year I age up so I hope they don't decide to throw the F40-44 in the last wave. I'm gettin' old right along with ya sister. Let's definitely meet up this time. Heaven help us: those 40-44 chicks are going to HURT us. Let's sacrifice something to the swim wave gods, because that last wave start was mentally brutal. But, on the upside we definitely survived that worst-case scenario. Onward & upward (or at least upright this time). Edited by jtrezza 2011-01-14 12:51 PM |

I really regret not visiting the med tent after I finished because I probably needed it. I was so sick for hours and passed out barely able to move back in the hotel room. I was most likely dehydrated. |

Extreme Veteran 475 Watertown, MA | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Hey everyone! Second HIM for me--I did Timberman last year--though it'll be my third as I'm most likely going to do either REV3 Quassy or Mooseman in June. Great to see some first timers in the mix, you guys are in for such an experience! The race was alot of pain and 6 months of training for one day is no joke, but man, you just can't replace that feeling crossing the finish line (hopefully with Chrissie there handing out medals again!). Someone asked about the course...I dug up what I wrote last year about the course (I have the luxury of training on the course all summer as my parents have a place up in Laconia): Here's the course profile, click the 'Show elevation' on the right to see how it breaks down. As you'll see, there are a few early rollers, then a pretty big climb once you turn onto Rt. 107 at mile 10. Next is a big drop off the top of the hill, followed by a 'flat' decent, followed by a false flat (i.e. it looks flat but you're actually on a slight uphill grade), then the climb again, then the rollers again. So the middle 25-30 miles are quite flat, it's the start and finish that hurts. The climb itself is approximately 6% over 1 mile; reasonably steep but not overly long. |

Extreme Veteran 490 Higganum, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread I'm really excited about it, the more I read, the more I feel good about my training. I never thought I'd be here even considering this. I looked back at the results from 2001 and there were just about 500 finishers, 9 years later, its over 2500! Only thing that has gone up that much is the price of fuel! |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Hmmm...some familiar names in this thread from last year's race. i doubt I'll be doing this race again this year, although I really liked it. Swim was choppy and didn't do my stomach any favors, but loved the bike - especially the out portion - just flying!! Some hills in there - one in particular that took a while going up but nothing too brutal. Flying down it on the way back was a dangerous ordeal though as it was crowded, starting to rain, and there were cars coming in the opposite direction. I'm thinking of heading up there about 2 weeks prior and getting in some training in case anyone's interested. And i'm planning on Lake Placid 2012 also. |

I'm just glad that it's seven months away, seeing as my swimming leaves a lot to be desired right now, i.e. it sucks. For you Timberman vets out there, any thoughts or advice on this swim? Thanks in advance! Rhett |
