This seems like a perfect sport for those with ADD/ADHD. I know one of the reasons I started "tri-ing" was because the idea of training for a marathon seemed like it wouldn't keep my attention very long. Kudos to those who CAN do it, by the way...I certainly don't mean any offense to marathoners. But tri's seem to mimick the rest of my daily life-constantly jumping from one thing to another, always needing to be on the go, and having a short enough attention span that a sprint distance is PERFECT for me.

umm I disagree. Nothing bores me more than an open water swim. I'm glad that portion is small.

intense exercise is a well documented, non-pharmaceutical treatment for AD/HD.. Back in teh day when I was really struggling with my attentional problems and distractibility, the shrink made me do 60 min hard core cardio every morning for a month before prescribing me drugs. Didn;t solve the whole problem for me, but helped A TON. Now I have all kinds of other coping skills and I don;t need any meds at all, but when I feel especially keyed up or anxious, nothing settles my mind better than exercise (and sometimes meditation if I'm not too far gone...)

This is exactly how I came to choose triathlon! I was running for a long time, and as my runs got longer, my interest in working out fell off. Same old same old, one foot in front of the other. Though I enjoyed the increased fitness and needed a goal, I just couldn't get excited about plodding along for all those training miles. Tri training is perfect for the attention-challenged because there's such a great deal of variety -- three different sports, and even different workout types within the 3 sports. No two workouts are the same!

I've been this way all my life, and I kind of just have learned to live with it and be effective anyway...kind of like that famous brain surgeon with Tourette's who just goes with the flow of his nervous tics..! IN my early 20s I remarked to a car full of friends "I would just hate it if I wasn't ADD. It would be so boring." They all burst out laughing, although I really hadn't meant to say anything funny. I just didn't realize that most 'normal' people don't feel bored when things are going along at a smooth, steady pace...!

LOL! Trying to imagine the scene when the starting gun goes off...remember that Monty Python skit with the guys with the hankies on their heads doing "olympics"?

Do you think those of us with a short attention span say "ohhh, yea" alot because we have no idea what the person talking to us has said for the past 10 seconds?

YES!!!! Although, I would sometimes prefer to think it's my superior intellect that keeps me from attending to what they are saying.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA LOL
