This will be my third start at Augusta - My first ended in a hospital for three days after a bike crash and a helicopter ride (I remember zip). last year I completed and even got to ride past the spot the crash happened (according to the helicopter bill).

Great course and a great town.

That sounds like a horrible crash, aintaround. Good to you for getting back at it and finishing the race last year. Did you do FL 70.3? If so, how would you compare the two events? I understand that I'm going to have to build some hills into my bike training. I am a back-of-packer who cramped up at FL 70.3 but still finished. Shooting for 55 swim, 3:30 bike and 2:30 run at Augusta. Hoping we don't top 85 degrees (yeah, right).

Concerning Augusta '09 the thing is I do not remember anything except the swim, the transition, the ride (sort of), and then . . .  Well then I woke up (sort of) striped down wondering where my bike was . . . a day later (no pain) the wife explained some (what she knew) is I had a crash, i was near not being very good, i was transported by helicopter to the ER. A day maybe two later we left Augusta for Tampa. I remember some not all.

A few weeks later I did IM Florida, the hard part was my hands. in the crash I broke most of my fingers. I had to swim away from the pack. touching the water hurt, getting slammed by the person next to me was "ACK". No blame on them, just I had to swim WAY outside of them.

Yes I have completed 70.3 Florida in '10 and '11. In comparison with the 70.3 and IMFL (IMFL completed in '09 and '10) and will provide any info you need.

Can't believe you did IMFL so soon after your crash. You are one tough dude! Re Augusta, I anticipate a more challenging bike than FL 70.3 but easier swim. I hope the aid stations are as well stocked and attended. Ice, drinks and food never ran out - and I was a caboose in that event!

Unbelievably fast swim, the bike is a bit more challenging but not overly tough and like FL 70.3 a single loop, last year there was some rain. The run course is a little confusing on paper but once on the course it's all good and lots of shade once in the side streets. Aid stations were very well stocked and attended. Tons of fan support and the finish line is one of the better for a 70.3.

you wont have any trouble with your swim goal. Bike course is hilly for us flatlanders but not tough. People from hilly areas think it is pretty flat. I actually really love this bike course. The run is flat with way more shade than Fla 70.3. It was well stocked both years I did it.

I am looking at this for my first 70.3.  I noticed the past two years there were coupon codes...anybody see anything out there??  $295 for a race is a little painful!

I'm in!  I just finished IMCdA, and will be doing this race as a prep for IMAZ in November.  I'm coming all the way from the Pacific NW, so it should be quite a change of scenery for me.  I hear the swim is wicked fast since it's down-current.  I don't have any time goals yet, but since I've only done hilly HIMs, a PR shouldn't be out of the question.

How is everyone's training going?

Does anyone know if this race sold out last year? I have a guy on the fence and curious to know! Or how many participants are currently signed up and what's the cap?

Shankie, I think it sold out around Aug, about 3200-3400 last yr. The first yr it sold out on July 4th weekend and they capped it at 3000.

tell him to jump the fence - if this is his first HIM he will be hooked - There is not a better swim for a first timer - the bike is a quick one loop (well at least for those that can bike - I don't do well but I enjoy), the run is lined with spectators that are fun and the loops ensure you get to see your friends/family a few times. the town is great and NO I am not from the chamber of commerce.

well after my local 70.3 (The Atomic Man) got cancelled, I decided to give Augusta a shot. Cutting it a little close I suppose, but hopefully I'm up for it.

registration is still open, I registered moments ago.  registrants look to be >3,000 already.  (I counted about 43 names on one page of the registrant pdf file x 72 pages = 3,096)

Just registered as well.  Got nervous with that many people already signed up.  Has this event ever sold out?

The 1st year 2009 there were 3349 people signed up or right at that.  Wave's were about 24 if I remember going off ever 4 minutes but once you are on the bike it looked like ants as far as you could see.

Last year not as many but still a large field.  I enjoy the venue and the run is awesome by far!

This year I thought the cap was 3300?

I'm unfamiliar with Augusta's climate.  I'm assuming this won't be wetsuit legal.  What are the odds?

All the videos on You Tube I saw for the last two years had almost everyone in a wet suit. I just rented one myself.

Its close, but has been wetsuit legal last 2 years, the water comes from deep behind the dam up river so its cold. If we get some rain in the days before, you could have up to 5mph of current. H2o Temps last 2 years have been around 70-74....enjoy the fast swim times.

I'm needing an extra room for friends if anyone has one available.

Third year for me and looking forward to it...it's a great race and good measuring stick.
