Hey folks,

Just prior to IMFL this past year, I remember a member of this forum was offering a service that would essentially mine the live updates from ironman live and broadcast via email or SMS to families/friends phone.  At the time it was a free beta version.  But I seem to remember it going to a paid service.

I can't recall any other details besides that and google searches haven't turned up much.  Any info regarding the above would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

Hey Eric,

I'm the developer of the service and unfortunately the WTC told me I'm not allowed to offer this service.  Since I couldn't afford legal fees to fight the strong arm of the WTC should they decide to pursue legal action against me I decided to stop.  I've sent countless letters and emails to the WTC pleading for them to reconsider and they refuse to change their minds.  This is unfortunate because it is such a great service for family and friends that are out there all day supporting the athletes.  If they should happen to change their minds I will let you know.

Oh  man...that stinks.

Let me just say, that was the bomb for IMFL.  Worked like a charm and wife has started asking if she was going to get similar updates for IMCDA.

Seems like such a useful and relatively hassle-free service, can't imagine what is going through WTC's collective brain.  Found a link to something similar that WTC had licensed to wigglewireless but now appears defunct.   From a legal perspective, are race results copyrighted? I mean, all you're doing is essentially harvesting information that THEY provide and repacking and rebroadcasting.  Perhaps the new change of leadership at WTC might change their mind.

Ah well, thanks for the info.  I sincerely hope you get it worked out.

Is there a way to stick a smart phone in your bento box and have family members track where the phone is?

I'm thinking about making it available until I get the official cease and desist letter.  If I do I'll let you all know.

brown_dog_us - 2011-06-07 3:44 PM Is there a way to stick a smart phone in your bento box and have family members track where the phone is?

I did exactly that for IMFL.  Used the sprint family locator which was actually free to me (free trial).  Work gave me a free phone (sans GPS) so that is no longer an option.  Thought about buying a pay-as-you-go phone, but would be quite a bit more expensive than the athlete tracker mentioned above.

Well, csharp, if you decide to stand that service back up, I'd be happy to throw you a couple of bucks.  If you do before June 26, would you mind dropping a post down on the IMCDA forum?

Thanks,

Eric

I use www.Endomondo.com when I am on training rides by myself. This allows my wife to track me for safety purposes. It's a free service. My wife can send "peptalks" to me as well, which is nice...and sometimes very funny.
