No one else getting excited for Savageman? I've been having my kids jump up and down on my legs every night to prepare.

I've been waiting for this thread to appear!!

I'm stoked - I got my brick last year and am hoping to get another.  I'm in for both the 30.0 and the 70.0.

LOL! Any other interesting training techniques? I'm just winding down from Eagleman and will start to map out my strategy for this next week. But, now, just enjoying some recovery time. Still, I see many hill training days both on the bike and run ahead. Fortunately, there's plenty of that where I live.

No, that's it as far as creativity, but congrats on the Eagleman finish! I've found a 6 mile loop from my house with about 500' of climb that I will repeat as needed to get milage in, plus I'm going to try to get out to Deep Creek and try the course in July to see if I can survive the course on my tri-bike.

I thought about both, but being my first year at the event I just want to ensure survival and hopefully a brick.

I'm jealous of everyone doing the race this year.  I did it last year, and had a blast, but it doesn't fit into my schedule this year.  I strongly recommend you find a way to ride the course before the race, if you can.

x2.  It's a very good idea to get a feel for this course before the race.  The pics don't do it justice.

As far as training techniques, hills, hills, and more hills.

Good luck to everyone racing!

Find the steepest, longest hill around you that you can find. Adjust your gearing such that the fastest you can go is 4mph out of the saddle. Do it over again, and again, and again, and again...

I am excited about Savageman, about my first HIM finished last weekend, and that I found this thread where I plan to lurk and learn from big boys

I know this has been beaten to death in the past, and I'll find out on my own in a few weeks, but have any of you past participants made it with a normal 53/29 crankset? I've done plenty of hill work with it (Rt. 77 out of Thurmont, Raven Rock Rd./Ritchie Rd. combo up to Ft. Ritchie, Ilchester), but I know Western Md. is another matter.

I'm in. Also curious to what people use on the race for cranksets.

I rode a compact with a 12-25 last year, and many told me I was nuts for doing that.  Personally, I can't imagine doing this course without a compact, but some do it.

I already know I won't be doing the course on my tri bike. I'm not overly bad with hills but I'm not the best either, especially with only a double chainring. My road bike has a triple chainring plus I have a 12-27 cassette I can use with it. Still, I'll be out on the hills to get better prepared and hopefully, I'll get out to Deep Creek to try out parts of the course as well.

Yep, there's my debate right there. I have a road bike with a triple chainring, but the cassette is 12-24. I might bring the tri bike to practice the route, and if my legs fall off that makes the decision to go to the road bike easier.

This will only be my second HIM (1st was B2B) and I'm really excited about it. Unfortunately, we don't have any good climbs around here. The 'hilliest' route has ~3700' over 100miles. I've been keeping it in the big chain ring and [unnecessarily] standing up on the climbs but know there is no comparison.

When I outgrew the gearing on my triple this past winter, I simply replaced the big ring (50 -> 54) to save money. I now have a 54/40/30 with 12-25 in the back. This race tells me I made the right decision

No, but that looks like fun. I did, however, make two key purchases yesterday, a compact crank and my hotel room at Wisp.

I used a compact front and 11-28 rear. I was very happy for each and every of the 28 teeth.

I'm going to do my practice ride with the compact and my 12-25, but I'll definitely be ready to pull the trigger on a friendlier cassette if need be afterwards.

I'm totally excited about Savageman (my first), the training is going well, and I too got new gearing (50/34 and 12-27).  I've got a road trip this weekend that takes me roughly by the course, and while I don't have time to stop and ride it (I do plan on making it out there for one of my long training rides in August), I might be able to drive it.  Is this worthwhile, and, if so, how long would it take - about 2 hrs?

Thanks,

Ryan

If you've got 2 hours to kill in Garrett County, I recommend riding the 30.0 bike course.  It's only 23 miles and is a far cry from the 70.0 course climbing wise, but is extraordinarily beautiful and has some nice climbs.  Particularly if you'll be back later in the summer to ride the 70.

Thanks - sounds like a plan.  BTW, Congrats on the Fondo - I heard it met all expectations from others who rode.
