Subject: Buying Tri Gear question - EBAY

So was looking into buying a fairly expensive item from someone off craigslist. They say they are going to broker the deal through Ebay/Paypal which is a bonus for me.  Affords me some protection.  Its just I have never heard of doing anything this way.  Tried to email Ebay but they said I needed to call them.  i am at work and cannot do that, so whats the next best thing?  Ask my friends on BT.  I will post her quote below as to how the deal will work.  My questionis has anyone ever done something like this with Ebay?  Does it sound legit?  In the 15 years I have been making online transactions I have only been screwed once.  Don't want it to happen again.  Thanks and let me know your opinions.  If it wasnt such a great deal I wouldnt bother.

"First you will have to send me your full name, address and phone number,i will contact eBay and they will send you the invoice with all the details about payment and insurance .
Regarding the payment, you will receive invoice from eBay ..you will be instructed to deposit the money to an eBay account,You have to pay with cash. They will hold and insure your money until receipt of the item in good condition. That is how their buyer protection policy is working. As far as the seller concerns, i will be glad to know that eBay has the possession of the money during the delivery period. That is my insurance. This is an refundable amount .
In 48 hours you will receive the item . After you receive the item you have 10 days to test the item and verify it.
After max 10 days you will contact eBay and you can tell them your decision. If you decide to hold the item,  then you will have to authorize eBay to release the funds to me, and the transaction will be completed.  If it does not matches 100% to your expectations, you will return it in maximum 10 days since the arrival date. In this case eBay protection program will refund you the full amount in 24 hours and the same delivery courier will pick up the item and you don´t have to pay the return shipping.I am sure you will love the item and will not want to return it, but it is good to know that you do have this second option available.
During this transaction , eBay will provide you all the the support you need and you can ask for all the details of this deal.

The grammar and spelling issues in that alone raise red flags with me.

i've bought some random tri stuff on ebay (pedals & shoes) + craigslist (my bike), and i've never been asked for something like this.

admittedly... the little warning bells went off in my head... but i'm just generally a skeptic!

sorry i can't be more helpful.... but ebay & private sales have been good to me so far (but i've never experienced a sort of odd "middle man" situation such as this!

proceed with caution...?

issues with this is "ebay" could contact you, where in reality it's their friend.

I'll also add: I've bought and sold a LOT of stuff on CL. It's pretty simple: I have this. You want it. You give me cash (or we use PayPal or whatever). I give you item.

Scam!!!   They do not need your name, full address, and phone number.  I run into this with buying/selling music gear quite a bit.

I have all the same concerns you guys have.  The item is listed on craigslist, but she wants to do the sale through ebay/paypal.  I will press her for more details, but my radar is on high alert.

If you can't meet up and do cash, run for the hills.  It is an attempt to get your personal info.

Post the link to the CL ad here. Have someone else respond and see what they say. You will be able to tell a "real" person from the spammer.

I used to work at eBay. This is a scam. In order to receive anything from eBay, you'd have to actually purchase the item on eBay - i.e., have an eBay account, bid/buy it now, etc.

Even then, eBay wont send you an invoice, and does not offer an escrow service (the type of service he's claiming you're going to get by sending "eBay" the money and then confirming to them that the item is what you want).

eBay also never suggests you pay with cash or with western union money orders, as it's almost impossible to track/return your money, unlike with a CC.

Basically, if you send that guy money, you'll never see the item, and you'll never see your money again.

It's the same technique the stupid Nigerian scams do. If you want to hand out your personal info, go right ahead.  I would suggest then that you wouldn't do it before actually talking to someone at Ebay.

I would ask the seller to post a "Buy It Now" auction for the item at the agreed upon price, and then you purchase the item via PayPal.   Then you have all the eBay protection.  Your name, address, and phone number are usually on your eBay profile (well, maybe not the phone number), which sellers can see as your shipping address.

Sucks if it was a good deal but what can you do.  At least you were wary enough to ask!

Usually if it is to good to be true...its not. IMO...pass...it may be legit but just has all the warning bells .

What is the good deal??

REEKS of scam. I believe the number one rule is to never give out your address and phone number on Craig's List. That's the first flag. He will contact Ebay? Flag number 2. Cash to Ebay? Flag number 3.

So you deposit your money in "an EBAY ACCOUNT???" and wait a few days and your item doesnt show up. You contact Ebay and they don't know what the hell you are talking about. Then what? You're out the cash and don't know where it went. Need I continue?

It's definitely a scam.  Try googling parts of the email and see what you come up with.  When I get responses like this from something (doesn't matter whether its CL or ebay or whatever), I ask them to answer a completely random question like what is 14+7 and can I get some different pictures.  One time was it not a scammer and the guy answered the weird question and asked what that was about and I let him know I was just making sure I was talking to a real person.  He understood, we met in person, and made a deal.

This is where you can tell it's a scam.

This guy wants you to send him information...so he can contact ebay.  Yeah right...he's just going to use that information to send you a bogus email pretending to be eBay so you can send the cash directly to him.  Then you'll never see the item, or your money again.  When you call eBay to ask what's the problem...they'll have no idea what you're talking about because they were never involved.

You did the right thing by calling eBay.  If this guy was legit...then he would simply post an auction on ebay, and you would navigate to ebay's site on your own, search for the listing, and bid/buy it now.
