I've been "lurking" around here long enough. About three months ago I researched triathlons on google and this site popped up. I was desperate for info, still am, still finding it here! I finished my first sprint on Aug. 20 in Cordele, GA. Great first tri - not too crowded, I didn't drown, and I'm hooked.
I've been reading other "lurking" threads, and unlike most everybody else, swimming is not my biggest problem, although I did use breast stroke for 2/3 of my first tri. I'd say probably my weakest spots right now are running speed and learning to bike all over again. I have no trouble staying on - it's when to change gears, what gears to switch to that's giving me a hard time.
I've heard that joining a group is great motivation, but that's probably one of my greatest fears. There's a tri group at the University of Georgia, where I work, but I'm not a college student anymore (I just turned 27 and graduation was so five years ago ) Plus, when people mention 25-mile bike rides I wonder at which spot in the road I'll collapse.
Also, how do y'all stay motivated over the off season?
So, that's me. And one more thing: GO DAWGS!

Welcome Stephanie!

Like everything the Bike fitness will come with practice/miles.  If you have a $150 burning in your pocket get an indoor resistance trainer for your bike.  Its not as boring as running on a treadmill, IMHO.  Good luck!

A big hey back y'all from Illinois...the trainer can be had even cheaper than $150.  That said, if you're currently on a mountain bike, get a city slick or the noise will drive you nuts

Wahoo .. another GA BT'er - welcome!

As I have found over the past two months training for my first season of races, there is an absolute wealth of information here (with no pressure/slant towards buying something) - just use the "search" function located on the opening forum page in the mid-upper right hand side. Type in your subject, being sure to select an appropriate time frame (default is one week) and *boom* the information is likely there.

If the threads do not answer your question or if you want a more personalized response, just post the question as the prevailing thought here seems to be that there is no such thing as a stupid question ... those who are no longer beginners remember making their way through the same things we are muddling through.

Lastly, I envy you being able to work in Athens. I went to Ole Miss and would looooove to live in Oxford.

Thanks, everybody, for all the encouragement. Getting into this sport has been incredible - from the people I met at my first race to all of y'all.
I used to think running was torture (still is on certain days but now I'm finding that I want to run, bike, swim, etc. It's like craving Waffle House, only better for you. I crave getting out on the road and just going.

Welcome...my motivation comes from seeing progress on my logs.  Also, a few empty days on the log motivate me to fill the blank space!  Also, having some short running events on the calendar every month gives me something to work towards.  Happy training....
