I guess most of us will vote for locales where we live.  Consequently I favor Maryland, Virginia, Deleware, and Pennsylvania.  I can't justify flying to an event.

I agree with Ken, but I think that where people live will be telling of the best state for triathlons. People who start triing will be from everywhere, but part of why people stick with it will be because they like the venues, driving distances, weather, etc. It's like polling: each vote will be very biased, but many votes can show the real story. Of course, like polling, it's also easy to get the wrong result or misread it, but it might work.

Exactly

You can only have an opinion of an event you have competed in. And generally speaking you will enter events close to home? So.. .
Anyway the best event I have participated in is the London Triathlon. It was close to home and had a large number of entrants. On the minus side I didn't get a t shirt. I would have needed to shell out $36 for one of those? Although saying that I did get a rather nice medal!!

Although you have races available Feb - Dec. Those are the only 2 months that is tolerable to race. Any other month and you could have 110 degree heat with 30 mph winds, and are only limited to swimming in lakes. At least in Cali. you could swim in a lake, pool, bay, river or the big blue and you won't have the winds or heat.

Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed my races there, but there is no way it is better than Cali.

Best state is probably the state you live in

While I would love to say NY is a the best state to Triathlon in, it really isn't. Even with temperatures in the 50s now, I can't remain pumped to bike train down here in the city.

The good news with the city is that it's a runner's city year round and I LOVE RUNNING. It hurts so much yet feels so good!!!

That's only the southern half of the state.  For the hotter months (June - Aug), that's when we head north to Flagstaff, the White Mountains, etc, for the tris up there.  The entire state doesn't experience 100+°F heat in the summer.  Then again, I did a race here in Tucson on July 3rd, and it was perfectly tolerable to me.  Just depends on what you're used to.

Just because you had hot weather (actually, it wasn't that bad) and wind for the IMAZ course doesn't mean the entire state is like that year round.

Come here, spend your money and race, then go back to whatever state you came from.  Please don't move here.  We've got enough transplants.

Don't worry. I think it's a safe bet that I won't leave San Diego to move to Tucson

I gotta vote for Colorado for a whole host of reasons:

  1. Of course, I live here
  2. During race season, you can find a tri about every other weekend.
  3. Some of the best professional triathletes live / train here
  4. The training partners out here are competitive and encouraging at the same time
  5. You just might get beat by Lance next year (Rumor is that he and Sheryl bought a house up north)

They didn't pick CO for the olympic training center for just political reasons - highest average elevation in the US.

I have never trained or raced outside Northern California so I have nothing to compare it to....I have lived many other places but that is not the comparison asked for here. I like the fact that I can ride outside year round, and because of population density there are tons of races within a 50 mile radius, everything from sprint to IM. We also get to swim in the ocean and ride in the mountains, very scenic.

A vote for here in SoCal. We're at the beach, and we don't have air conditioning in our house because it never gets hot enough to need it, and we only use the heat about 5 or 6 times a year. Perfect weather for training/racing year round, the birthplace of the sport is here, and there's a race almost every weekend in season and races year round. Plus, as mentioned, plenty of open water swimming in the good 'ol Pacific!

Florida, because...wetsuit, what's a wetsuit? Ever spend a few 'summer months' in Cali? The ocean fluctuates about four degrees warmer than in winter. And this is in the afternoon once the grey, marine cloud layer has finally burned off. No thanks.

Definitely, Montana..
Often, I get a lane to myself in the pool, no traffic on the roads and no problem with overheating on the 12 degree days.
Only problem...my feet get cold when I run in the snow...My bicycle pace goes down in the ICE.

Well, I can't believe that I was vote number 2 for South Carolina. SC is really a great tri state. The new SCTS (South Carolina Triathlon Series) has 11 races in every area of the state. You have a very diverse geographic selection with races from the mountains of the upstate to the flatlands of the Lowcountry. Ocean swims, lake swims, pool swims, we got 'em. We have races in beautiful state park settings far into the boondocks or races that run through towns and Marine bases. The company that runs the SCTS also runs the NCTS so you can go up and do White Lake or Pinehurst and know exactly what to expect...a well run race. We also have several Beach Bum Tris on Hilton Head which are a hoot and we have the triathlon series in Charleston and a very nice race in Kiawah.

And you won't meet friendlier folks anywhere. Hey they let me live here, enough said.
