Subject: Weekly BT Therapy Session- Company Christmas Party
My company Christmas Party is 3 weeks away and I don't have a date.  I really don't want to go alone, although there might be a few others (maybe 2 other younger ones going solo but I don't know them THAT well).  I have guy friends and know guys who would come with me, but I don't want to ask them just to have someone.  I want to go with someone who will be comfortable in that type of environment and will be lots of fun.  I haven't really met anyone who would be a ton of fun to hang with the night.  I am wondering if I should go- I'm not dying to go and won't feel left out if I don't go.  What do ya'll think?

I think that if you do not attend it would be a breach of corporate protocol. Depending on your company, it could be a serious breach or a minor breach. In some companies, not attending corporate festivities can be a career-limiting-move.

Aside from that, I think you'd be robbing yourself of a chance to enjoy niceties with folks with whom you spend most of your time.

Go.

What are the office politics? In many offices, the Holiday Party is a required event.

If you can truly skip out with no reprucussions, do so an enjoy a free evening.

It's not a requirement.  I went my first year, didn't go the past 2 years because I have a half mary out of town that weekend.  This year I don't have anything that weekend, but could always say I did if I didn't want to go.  I don't exactly like to hang out with my cowrokers outside of work.  "nuff" said about that.

Well, this would be breaking your "no dating" moratorium. I don't see the big deal. You have a pretty big office, go alone and hang on Jim and Amy all night.

Whether you want to go is, unfortunately, hardly the question. The real question is "would it be a good idea to go?" To socialize with your boss and/or the higher-ups, etc.?

Although it sounds like it would not limit your career to miss the event (but be REALLY sure on this one--the party may be more important than you think. Is there someone trustworthy at the office you can ask?), would it help your career to attend?

Janelle,

I, unfortunately, work with a bunch of crude and crass people (with the exception of 2 or 3 people). I do not socialize with them, as a general rule. However, every year I attend our holiday festivities with a smile on my face; I am gracious and friendly. I do it because it makes my boss happy. It wouldn't hurt my earnings potential or my standing in the company if I did not attend, but it would send a signal that I can't get be social for the most festive of occassions.

What would it say about you if you did not attend, yet again?

3558's right...the food drives the decision. Chipotle and bacon-wrapped scallops and snowflake cookies and Cristal?  First in line to get in.  Cash bar and food in 'warming station' disguise catered for the masses?  You've got a half mary to do somewhere.

This COJ stuff is pretty easy.  I should try it more.

Why do you have to have a date at a x-mas party and why would that play into your thinking? Do you have any idea how many people hook up at x-mas parties? Go solo, if you aren't having fun, leave solo

I'd at least show up (free food. Enough said). Mingle, smile, make sure your boss sees you and if it's boring, leave. That way at least they think that you care about the company

Because everyone is married.  ISeriously I would be one of the few single.  Then who would I talk to when everyone is drunk slow dancing with their so/spouse?  I guess i could just hang out at the punch bowl!
