Thanksgiving...what's for dinner?

My family usually has gumbo/seafood/cajun stuff. Some aunts and uncles have traditional fare mixed in too, but we never know. Good stuff.

Turkey, dirty rice, cornbread, sweet potatoes with pecan topping.  Pecan pie and pumpkin pie, chocolate chip cookies for the fussy ones who don't like pie (!!). 

I am cooking it all tonight so hubby can put it on the stove/oven tomorrow while I'm at work.

Christmas is gumbo, potato salad, and ham. 

I miss those big family holidays where I come from.  Dad usually crashes and watches football, and we all go out somewhere.  Ah, but there's noplace to go out now

 DH's family don't do the "family" stuff.

Gumbo.........mmmmmmmmmmm.  Living in the midwest blows.  We have the typical Thanksgiving stuff, turkey, pumpkin pie.  I lived in Florida for a while and got a taste of what good southern food is like.  I would love to have a southern Thanksgiving....or the talent to cook southern food.

Here's what I'm assisting in making:

Deep-fried turkey, stuffing, squash, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, apple pie and choclate cream pie. Actually my only responsibility is cooking the deep-fried turkey, and peeling the potatoes.

the DQ by our house, and the only one in town, does NOT make Pumpkin Pie Blizzards. 

Still do the basic turkey, dressing, etc. fare on Thanksgiving. Growing up, we would then get a sack of oysters on the Friday after, eat raw until full then have fried oyster poboys. Over the weekend, we would cook a turkey/oyster gumbo with the leftover turkey (using carcass for stock, etc.) and oysters. Haven't done that since my daddy died, but still do the turkey gumbo the weekend after. IMHO, that's the best gumbo, better even than seafood.

Roasted brined turkey with pan gravy--raised by our good friend who is coming to dinner; smashed red potatoes; oyster dressing; sweet potato casserole; squash casserole; frosted cranberry squares; cranberry orange relish; collard greens with ham hocks; green beans with carmalized onions; pumpkin and pecan pies made with whole wheat crusts; bourbon whipped cream; pumpkin butter cheesecake; whole grain rolls....oh and for starters artichoke dip with toast points; bacon wrapped pecan-stuffed dates.

I have to say that everything from the stock to the bread is homemade by me and I love doing this for my family and making memories for the children!
