Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a flaw in my personality, I get bored too easily. I have served four years in the military, completed my bachelor's degree and have been working as a firefighter and a paramedic for six years now. Although the job is great, I have an awesome work schedule and I make decent coin I find myslef mentally bored. I have this feeling within me that I need to further myself. I am throwing around the idea of appyling to different medical schools. I am thirty years old, so I know I am not too old and my background as a paramedic would help. It's just the starting all over thing. Have any of you had this expierience? If so what choices did you make? |

Queen BTich ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in the same situation as you. My personality is similar and I worry it will get me in trouble in the future (too many different jobs, too much time in school, etc). Can't really offer advice, I am comforted to know someone else is feeling the same thing, but I'm not comforted to know I still may feel this way in 10 years...sigh. Anyway, I'm looking at schools too. I think if I don't know what to do with myself I might as well learn as much as I can. Good luck. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Being bored is a waste. If you are bored, then go back to school if that is what you want. It's your life. Don't waste it for one second being bored!! You too Haley! So what if you change jobs a million times?!? Who cares??? If it's a good life, it's a good life. Interesting, challenging. Standing still is not challenging. Rah Rah Rah!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Don't tempt me. Seriously, yeah, they keep me busy, but that doesn't mean I'm not bored. I am bored a lot. That is why I started the real estate investing, the tri training, whatever. I am feeling bored a lot lately...trying to decide what to do about it. I think my training is just too light right now. Once the IM stuff really picks up I'll be better. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's the journey that's more important than the destination. Such a cliche but so true. Perhaps you shouldn't be so focused on the end game but rather the process. We live in such an incredible economy/country and there are a million ways to make a million bucks so find out where your "passion" is and do it...the money will follow. Don't do something because it "pays the bills" because you'll end up kicking yourself and be miserable later. Are you passionate about medicine and helping others? If so, don't look back and go for it. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have to agree, just go for it.. Don’t wait till the time is right or for when your are ready, just do it. If its not going to cause physical harm to anyone else there is no time to waist. And it is that easy. I had a really hard time leaving the navy when I was young, always waiting or trying to save money but then I realized I would never be ready. After I left the navy I have gone through a couple of good well paying jobs, but left at the drop of a hat when I realized it wasn’t for me. Now I work for myself as a Real Estate broker and couldn’t be happier. I make my own hours, set my own pay, and don’t have to ask anyone for time off to go to the gym or jockey for vacation time. Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. Cheers. Rice. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just know that going to medical school won't cure that. You'll move on to more challenges. Trust me. Do stuff that makes you happy though whatever that is. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Totally agree with that!! But in the mean-time at least he'll be learning cool stuff and won't be bored. Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The stock answer is, be happy, and swallow the pain to get you there. Whatever that is. The not so stock reality that goes along with that is that you may have to do something you don't want to for a while in order to be able to do the things that make you happy - Just make sure you eventually get there. Then, the pain, the investment is purposeful. But, whatever you do, make sure that at the end of the day, you'll be able to look back and say - although it might not have been perfect, or comfortable, all the way through, that you didn't spend a single minute of time not chasing your dream or doing what makes you, you. If you don't, then something was left on the table. |

I can only agree with what others have posted....even tho it's cliche, i live by 'em "Life is not about the destination, but the journey" "when your inbox is empty then you should be dead" "carpe diem" (yeah, that's *supposed* to be my screen name but everyone thinks it's Crapay Diem...but I'm holding on to that dancing naked guy!) It's never too late to try something new. It may be macabre or as my sister teases me "ma-ca-BRE" to say, but when I'm on my death bed I want as few regrets as possible...meaning, I have my "List of things to do before I die" and I want to have crossed off as many as possible. Just remember...do whatever you want for yourself, not for someone else. ps...note sig line below...It's the sig line on my work email. I don't care if I'm emailing the publisher (i work at a newspaper) or someone I'm trying to set up a relationship with (I'm in marketing), that is what I live by (or try) and have had more people comment that they want to live that way too but are afraid. Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() not a flaw, an asset. if you really want to go to med school, great, do it. If you just feel like you need some stimulation or a new goal, think about taking courses or doing some prof'l development work. Take a painting class. Take a course on Greek Poiltics. Meditation. Start a regular volunteer gig teaching kids to read. whatever, just sometyhing to keep you on your toes. I think the vertical journey can be a HUGE addiction with no real gains. Try expanding what you already are (I want to call that a horizontal journey, but it's way way too easy a set up for Jim) "Furthering" yourself does not necessarily mean a new career. my 2c. |

The Original![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I like feeling settled and secure to an extent. But I do go through phases where I get bored and think "where do I want to go with my life?" And then I think about for a few weeks, and then it goes away. But yeah- I try to do other things in my life (tri/marathon training, TNT each year, church stuff) so I don't get bored. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Before you commit to med-school, figure out what you really WANT to do. Maybe playing doctor (for a living) isn't it. It takes so long to amortize the doctor education, you want to be careful you don't get trapped into being a doctor and not scratching that itch in four or five more years. It's great to want to be mentally stimulated and challenged, and you might find some other choices more rewarding. (I changed companies at 32, but am essentially still in the same career.) |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's a good investment in yourself. I've often thought about going back to school but I know that it won't be that great of an investment financially - even over the long haul. Going from Paramedic to Doctor seems to me (outside looking in) like it would be a great investment with a high return. |
