Subject: Some songs that make me cry
There are several, but here are two that I can't hear or sing without weeping.

Joni Mitchell's A Case of You. I think she is one of the greatest singer songwriters. This song starts out with that jaw dropping statement of personal liberation, and then she goes on those riffs about the mysterious contradictions of human love.  And she sings it with that exquisite voice of hers.

Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, constant in the darkness
Where’s that at?
If you want me I’ll be in the bar...

Oh I am a lonely painter

I live in a box of paints
I’m frightened by the devil
And I’m drawn to those ones that ain’t afraid...

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine

And you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
Still I’d be on my feet
And still be on my feet...

My all time favorite song to cry by is Our Love is Here To Stay by George and Ira Gershwin. I think the story goes that Ira wrote the lyrics for his brother while George was dying. I love the way Tony Bennett sings it.

It's very clear
Our love is here to stay
Not for a year, but ever and a day

The radio
And the telephone
And the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go

But oh my dear
Our love is here to stay
Together we're going a long long way

In time the Rockies may crumble
Gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

Not only men

Lots of songs make me cry! The one that made me completely break down and sob, not just a tear rolling down my cheek, but serious gotta-pull-the-car-over-now-'cause-I-can't-see-the-road sobbing is one off Melissa Ethridge's new CD. Its the "greatest hits" CD but its got some new stuff on it. The song is "I Run for Life". I'm sure you all can figure out what its about. My Mom died of cancer. The song rips me up. And inspires me.

Here's the lyrics:

I Run for Life

(Melissa Etheridge)

It's been years since they told her about it
The darkness her body possessed
And the scars are still there in the mirror
Everyday that she gets herself dressed
Though the pain is miles and miles behind her
And the fear is now a docile beast
If you ask her why she is still running
She'll tell you it makes her complete

[Chorus:]
I run for hope
I run to feel
I run for the truth
For all that is real
I run for your mother your sister your wife
I run for you and me my friend I run for life
Taken from OldieLyrics.com
It's a blur since they told me about it
How the darkness had taken its toll
And they cut into my skin and they cut into my body
But they will never get a piece of my soul
And now I'm still learning the lesson
To waken when I hear the call
And if you ask me why I am still running
I'll tell you I run for us all

[Chorus]

And someday if they tell you about it
If the darkness knocks on your door
Remember her remember me
We will be running as we have before
Running for answers
Running for more

Chuck Norris ate Vin Diesel and crapped out Mr. T.

That event has been the inspiration for every song ever written that makes anyone cry.

(sorry, but those Chuck Norris, Vin Diesel and Mr. T threads are freakin' hilarious)

That's terrible. I know where you're coming from, not the song, but losing a family member to suicide.

There was a song (alternative pop) out a few years ago that I can't remember the name of but it had a lyric in it "don't know if I'll ever, get put back together".  It was on the radio a lot right around the time that my older brother died in 2000 and that damn line so accurately reflected how I felt (feel) about it that I can't hear that song without getting misty eyed.

Can anyone think of the song I'm talking about?

I know I've got a 'brother' theme going here, but nobody can listen to the lyrics in Elton John's The Greatest Discovery without an emotional tear or two over the description of a child discovering he has a brand new baby brother.

Peering out of tiny eyes
The grubby hands that gripped the rail
Wiped the window clean of frost
As the morning air laid on the latch

A whistle awakened someone there
Next door to the nursery just down the hall
A strange new sound you never heard before
A strange new sound that makes boys explore

Tread neat so small those little feet
Amid the morning his small heart beats
So much excitement yesterday
That must be rewarded must be displayed

Large hands lift him through the air
Excited eyes contain him there
The eyes of those he loves and knows
But what's this extra bed just here

His puzzled head tipped to one side
Amazement swims in those bright green eyes
Glancing down upon this thing
That make strange sounds, strange sounds that sing

In those silent happy seconds
That surround the sound of this event
A parent smile is made in moments
They have made for you a friend

And all you ever learned from them
Until you grew much older
Did not compare with when they said
This is your brand new brother
This is your brand new brother
This is your brand new brother

I agree. Tears In Heaven is at the top of my list too.

These lines are a car puller over for me:

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Clapton is just so brilliant. And where he got the courage to both right that song and then put it out there I just don't know.

Can anyone think of the song I'm talking about?

I'm so sorry about your brother. I can't even imagine.

I think the song is "Bent" by Matchbox 20:

 MATCHBOX 20 - Bent

If I fall along the way
Pick me up and dust me off
And if I get too tired to make it
Be my breath so I can walk

If I need some other love
Give me more than I can stand
And when my smile gets old and faded
Wait around I'll smile again

Shouldn't be so complicated
Just hold me and then
Just hold me again

Can you help me I'm bent
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together

You're breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

If I couldn't sleep could you sleep
Could you paint me better off
Could you sympathize with my needs
I know you think I need a lot

I started out clean but I'm jaded
Just phoning it in
Just breaking the skin

Can you help me I'm bent
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together

You're breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

Start bending me
It's never enough
I feel all your pieces

Start bending me
Keep bending me until I'm completely broken in

Shouldn't be so complicated
Just touch me and then
Just touch me again

Can you help me I'm bent
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together

You're breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

Can you help me I'm bent
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together

You're breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

This song used to reduce me to tears until I found the strength to let him go.

MISSING MAN
(Julia Fordham & Gary Clark)

YET ANOTHER DAY SLIDES INTO MIDNIGHT
FROM YOUR CAMP THERE'S NOT A SINGLE WORD
SEEMINGLY YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN
I'M STILL YOUR GIRL

PEOPLE TELL ME I AM STRONG
I MIGHT HAVE TO PROVE THEM WRONG
AS THE CRACKS BEGIN TO SHOW
I'M TRYING TO FIND THE STRENGTH TO LET YOU GO
    MISSING MAN

HOPE TURNED OUT TO BE A DANGEROUS LESSON
FAITH A SHALLOW RIVER IN DISGUISE
RUNNING THROUGH MY PATIENT SPIRIT
DROWNING MY PRIDE

    CHORUS

    MISSING MAN
    MISSING MAN
    DO YOU MISS ME
    MISSING MAN

    MISSING MAN
    MISSING MAN
    DO YOU MISS ME
    MISSING MAN

Fire And Rain

<script>Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Suzanne the plans they made made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it toI've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you againWon't you look down upon me Jesus
You got to help me make a stand
You just got to see me through another day
My body's achin' and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other wayOh I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you againBeen walkin' my mind to an easy time
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around
Well there's hours of time on the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the groundOh I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you baby one more time again now
Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things comin' my way this time around now
Thought I'd see you thought I'd see you
Fire and rain

Jim - that's the song.  Thanks, and thanks.  I know that my experience is not what the song is about but that chorus just nails the feeling right on the head.

Music is such an integral part of our lives and experiences.  It's amazing how we all tie events in with songs, be they good or bad.  Sometimes I wonder if even the musicians themselves realize how important some of their songs end up being to people years and years down the road.
