Reposting here. Participants are expected to know and agree to abide by the terms (that means no welching on the losers' terms!).

January 2006 Swim Challenges

Rules & Terms

If your 2006 Calendar includes a Spring triathlon, now is the time to resume and/or kickstart your swim fitness training.

Rules/Guidelines

  • This is a challenge to promote the attainment of a specific swim distance goal. Any distance over goal (over 100%) will be tossed out for the purposes of calculating the winning team.
  • Alignyourself with a team. We are lining up regional teams for thischallenge but if you find yourself a Challenge Orphan, PM a teamcaptain and ask to join their team or just declare your allegiance. We're not formal about joining a team. Please publicly announce so thatyou are put on the roster.
  • Team members calculate and pledge their swim distance goal for the month of January 2005. Races and open water swimming applies toward the count.
    • "Swimming distance" includes distance from kick board, paddles and/or fin drills.
    • Open water swims must be measured by a GPS type of device, objective measuring system, or by a sponsoring swim race.
  • Team members need to report their goal to their Team Captain by January 7. The extended date is due to the late start of the Challenge.
  • Team Captain must report their goals to Marmadaddy by end of day January 7.
  • Each team will pick a Captain (or you may self-declare) andthe Captain is responsible for collecting the weekly swim distancetotals from their team members, and reporting said distances to marmadaddy.Final numbers will be probably be correct.
  • Participants must blog their swim training. If it's not blogged, it didn't happen for the purposes of this Challenge.
  • Reportingweek begins Monday and ends Sunday. Captains, please report weeklynumbers by Monday morning to marmadaddy. Please use my personal email account support@beginnertriathlete.com to report your team weekly totals. Don't use the BT support account.

Determining Winning Team(s)

Calculations for determining winning team will be done the same as last month. It will be a combination of % of team members who reached their goal +final percentage of aggregrate team goal attainment. In this way, bothindividual goal attainment and team effort both carry weight. It alsolevels the playing field (for teams with fewer team members). It will work like this:

  • Calculate the percentage of team members who reached their goal.
  • Calculate the aggregrate team goal attainment average (throwing out anything over 100%).
  • Average these 2 numbers. The team with the highest average of these two numbers wins.

Terms for Losing Teams

With the exception of some people with a strange thing for turkey feathers, the consequences of last months challenge seemed acceptable to all. So, the terms are still somewhat open but the gist of the terms are:

  • Losingteam members must change their avatar from February 1 to February 28 to an avatar that must be agreed upon by all captains before this challenge ends on January 31.
  • Losing team members must include an homage to the winning team in theirsignature line, precise working to be agreed upon by all captains by January 21.
  • Feel free to contribute your ideas on the avatar and signature line homage.

Other Legally Binding Stuff:

  • Smack talking is not mandatory but certainly makes things a little more interesting.
  • Pleasedon't take the smack talking personal. If you find yourself feelinglike you've been slighted, go clean your bike then post a zippy comeback orjust say something like "You're a booger head!" You'll get cheers forbeing a good sport and you'll have a clean bike.
  • As with all challenges, this is an honor system, self-reporting challenge.

The ultimate goal is for you to meet your goal. That’s what it’s all about. That, and a little smack talking.

I also don't think this challenge commenced December 1. ;p

"Losingteam members must change their avatar from February 1 to February 28 to an avatar that must be agreed upon by all captains before this challenge commences on December 1"

By the way, I'm up for this challenge, but I need a team. I haven't done one of these yet.

Just curious about the thinking behind the penalty for surpassing your goal...wouldn't that be a good thing?

Sorry about the delay, I just noticed this.

This is to prevent or at least discourage sandbagging, like say Renee committing to 300 yards and then swimming 20,000.

Not that she'd ever actually swim 20k in a month.

You dog!!!

Can't believe I was dissed by the MarmaMan.

So... naturally, I had to go back in my logs to find my biggest swim month - 35,499 in May last year - our first Swim Challenge. Seem to remember something about Buttercups, couldn't get my yardage up...
