Subject: Gatorade Endurance Formula?

I have adapted to training and racing with just basic Gatorade + taking Lava Salt tables every 1/2 hour on longer runs/rides.  But I do cramp up if I'm not on top of this really close.

I have tested my sweat rate and can lose up to 50 oz an hour, so I try to drink as much as I can to keep this in check.

Is anyone out there using the Gatorade endurance formula?  Do you see any difference between the normal Gatorade and this?  I haven't used it because until today I didn't know it came in a power that I can mix.  I usually take powder Gatorade on long runs to re-fill my camelbak every hour or so.

The Endurance formula just adds more electrolytes (sodium, potasium, etc.), but the additions are relatively modest.  I seem to be a pretty heavy sweater too and find I still need to supplement with something like your Lava Salt tabs or Endurolytes when I go longer durations even when using the product.

I used Gatorade Endurance, mixed with Carbo-Pro for IM WI last year, and it really tore me up. I like the taste, but I just can't use it. The simple sugars destroyed me. I've since switched to Hammer's "Perpetuem", with much better results. I highly recommend that you try it. I've switched to using exclusively Hammer & E-Caps products. They really do work.

I use the Gatorade Endurance and don't really see much of a difference

Someone mentioned it before but the new endurance formula does have more electrolytes. However, in my experience, most (not all) endurance long-course triathletes need more sodium that this. It's almost impossible to get all of your sodium requirements from a drink so supplemental tabs (Lava, Endurolytes, etc.) become important.

Without knowing the concentration of an athlete's sweat, I usually recommend at least (minimum) 500 mg of sodium per hour. I myself need upwards of 1000mg/hour.

How would one know the concentration of one's sweat? Does it change depending on the weather ie temp./humidity? I live in MA so runs outside now it is often in the 30's I sweat more when I run and it is 80 but does the concentration change along with the amount wit the weather?

IMO Gatorade as a whole is pretty worthless as a workout or recovery drink. It has so much sugar that you can't help but cramp. The Endurance Formula has a bit more sodium and some potassium but is lacking in the other electrolytes. Try a sports drink from Hammer or Crank. I personally use Cranksports efuel and it is awesome on long rides. It has the electrolytes already in so you don't have to supplement with salt tabs or anything and it is isotonic so it is digested easier and doesn't sit in you gut waiting to be absorbed. I have also used Hammer's Perpetum and I like that also for really long rides. Just experiment and find out what works best for you.

If you look at the ingredient list of regular Gatorade and the same for Endurance formula, I think the only thing different is the electrolytes.  Too much sugar is right!  With the cramping you can get from the extra sugar, the benefits from the electrolyte boost is almost negated.  Hell you might as well use Gatorade Rain if you wanna quench your thirst.  I still use Endurance Formula because I'm used to it, but I plan on changing to Infinit or Perpetuem this season.

Sugar doesn't induce muscle cramping directly. If it is a muscle cramp in hotter conditions, most likely the cause is electrolyte based (mostly sodium and chloride). If it is not warmer environmental conditions, it may be due to breathing or muscular fatigue (those are still unproven theories). Normal Gatorade and the Endurance Formula have identical sugar content, it is just the electrolytes that differ.

The sugar and sodium in sports drinks work in concert to not only help your body absorb the nutrients and fluid but also maintain your body's drive to drink, which is a good thing as it promotes continual rehydration.

The positive thing about so many sports drinks on the market is that we can determine the one that works best for each of us through a little trial and error. Just because one works for you, doesn't mean it will work for your training partner. Experiment during your base season, find the one that works the best for your body and stick with it through your season.

Thanks for all the posts - some good information on here.   I ran a 50k a couple of weeks ago, the temp was in the low 80's and humid.  I made it through the race with just normal Gatorade, 2 Lava Salts per hour and a PowerGel every 45 minutes.  However I did feel some minor cramping in my calfs.    I have decided to try Enduralytes with the normal Gatorade and water to see if that is going to be a good mix for me.  I'm on a budget and don't like to spend a bunch of money if I don't have to and the Enduralytes are still within my budget.

I'm a BOP->MOP so I'm not too concerned about the competition aspect of tri's or ultra's I just want to enjoy them, keep my body in great shape while training and not cramp up durning the event.

How does one you test their sweat rate?  ... seems like an excellent piece of knowledge to have going into a long distance work-out/race.

My method is real simple, I'm sure someone may chime in with a better one.

1. I check my weight naked on a digital scale
2. Workout for one hour
3. Towel off, check my weight naked again
4. Total oz lost=Difference between Starting and Ending Weight+Total weight in oz that I consume during the hour.

I usually can weigh the same after one hour of working out + downing 50 oz of Gatorade, so it makes it simple, I must have lost 50oz of sweat.

Now I have seen and read many times that you can only absorb 25-30 oz per hour, but I think that might be an average person, I'm not average when it comes to sweating and that average person may weigh 150lbs - I weigh right at 190, so I need more than the average.

But as many have said, it is really an experiment with yourself - I'm still working on it, however my wife has completed 2 ironmans and 4 HIMs and multiple other endurance events and has never cramped, but she weighs about 110lbs and doesn't sweat a lot, so what works for someone else it likely to be different with you depending on your size and makeup.

Here's what I don't understand in regards to using Hammer Products or like products vs. Gatorade Endurance Formula, and maybe someone here can enlighten me... :-)

In regards to nutrition and the endurance athlete (mainly triathletes), I always hear that to perform at your best in traithlons, an athlete should simulate in training what he/she will be doing/consuming in competition. If you consume something on race day that is different than what you do consistently in training, some major GI distress can occur. So, if Gatorade Endurance Formula will be the only electrolyte replacement drink on the course in a pretty long endurance event, why then train with Hammer Products or the like seeing that on race day only Gatorade Endurance will be available. Now, I have a heavy sweat rate as well so it would be impossible to carry on me Hammer Products or similar products for a long endurance race. I would eventually run out and have to start drinking the Gatorade.

I could never figure this out so if anyone has the answer, please let me know. Thanks.
