Subject: possible March challange

Ok, I love being part of the Hamsters in the run challenge for Feb. What I have noticed is that I gave up on some bike rides that I should have, just to make sure I was on track for the run. Although more complex, I am proposing the March challange to be "choose" your 2 or 3 or 4 goals you want to meet. The less obvious 4 could be weighs, streeching or for that matter sleep I love the group challange, but found myself off track with the rest of a "balanced" 2 sport traing routine at this time. (swimming is out till the ice is gone for me ). Let me know what you guys think.

DISCLAIMER!!!! BTW as much as I like my suggestion, not having been a team captin, and not having enough computer access to be one, dose not give me the perspective to see if this is a realistic idea.

Great idea; I was thinking along those lines as well during my workout yesterday. Focusing on swimming in January was nice, and focusing on running this month was nice as well, but starting in March, I must be focusing on all 3 sports. I know people were talking about a bike challenge in March, but if there was I challenge were I could set public goals for all 3 might actually motivate me to actual ride my bike (biking just hasn't been happening this winter).

March is a little early in the season to really ride a bike here.
I'm sure I will get out, but often March weather sucks.

It could be similar challenge with each entrant giving:
yards/meters/minutes to swim
kms/miles/minutes to bike
kms/miles/minutes to run

Calculate the percentages the same as the Feb run challenge, then average the 3 for an individuals total %.

Then calculate the team % the same as the feb challenge.

Understandable that running may have supplanted time in the saddle and/or the pool when trying to reach your goal ... but the whole point of the challenge for me was to overemphasize a particular discipline for the month in addition to the regular schedule.

Periodic overemphasis on a particular discipline is a training tenet I came across inTriathlete Magazine's Matt  Fitzgerald's The Complete Guide to Triathlon Training. By doing such, you work on developing your base with each sport and building up the individual muscle groups central to increasing your strength + speed.

To that end, there is a March bike challenge brewing - that by definition does not necessarily have to be mutually exclusive from this potential challenge.

I'd definitely participate in a "Balanced Challenge", it sounds like a great way for people to focus on their individual training needs while still participating in a challenge .

April would be better for a bike challenge for those of us in the COLD states!

I think it would be great to start a 3-fold challenge, especially in March when many of us start our training seasons.  I'm in if this gels...

by no means was I suggesting only a ballanced plan. I for one do not have access to a pool or lake for at least 6 more weeks. I would not be able to put a swim goal into the mix. For those still wanting to emphesize there bike in March, knock yourself out! I just figured you would still be running or swimming, and stating the amounts you wish to achive along with an emphisis would be fine too

With separate goals for the 3 disciplines, you could make the challenge what you wanted.
Run focused, swim focused or bike focused.

The key would be to meet your goal.

Ok, then call it a "Design Your Own Challenge". I'd still do it!

I'd be interested too. I need something to keep me honest and not a total slug over Spring Break. I won't be able to swim but will have access to trails and an exercise room so having goals that include some bike and run miles will motivate me.

One suggestion though- the Feb challenges accepted outside miles=hamster wheel miles and bike trainer miles=outside miles. For those of us Northerners, we'll still need that in March. I run outside but am not riding outside consistently yet(3 times so far this year).

If someone else will be in charge of setting it up, I will gladly participate (I've learned from sitting on too many church and school committees that if I sound too enthusiastic, then I end up being the chairman of the committee before I know what happened! So I'm trying to prevent that! ha!)

a multi-sport challenge for multi-sport athletes! great idea....i'm in if it gets set up.....sadly that is what most of the other posts look like: a bunch of people who want to participate but don't want to organize.
Maybe it'd work better as an individual challenge rather than a team one....just an idea...

One idea would be to use a point system. I think I've read something about this somewhere, but don't remember the exact points. I think it was:
1 point = 100 yds/m swam = 1/4 mi run = 1 mi bike

This way, you would pledge points in a month and it doesn't matter how you get there.

I like the idea of doing the point system. It would make it easier for the team captains to keep track of the percentage goal. Alot of people seem interested in doing just a bike challenge for March but I know personally won't be building my bike miles much until April. March is scheduled to be a fairly balanced month with maybe a little swim emphasis so this challenge fits me better.

I would be willing to be a team captain but I will be off computer for the week of Mar 18-25, still training just limited computer access.

An example of application of the points system based on my own scheduled training:
35000 yds swimming=350 points
250 miles bike=250 points
90 miles running= 360 points
So my goal would be 960 points for the month. If I had problems meeting the bike miles on Spring Break, I could compensate by increasing either my swim or run to get the points needed.
Just some thoughts.

I am game, I think.

My problem is I have no clue about distance. I am new to this, doing mainly time stuff right now.

As I don't have an indoor trainer the bike challenge is a no go for me. I am interested in a 2 sport challenge though (Swimming and Running goals). Anyone else interested?
