Veteran 298 chicago | Subject: March Multisport Challenge! OK, since I'm interested in this, and so, apparntly, are several other people, let's see what happens. Anybody wishing to join please do. Form a team if you want! If it seems that there are not enough teams out there we can always switch to an individual challenge. But, if you want to be a team captian just say so. RULES: 1) This will be run on a point system, as suggested my camy 1 point = 100 yds/m swam = 1/4 mi run = 1 mi bike Set your goal points and get them however you want to. You do not have to specify how many points you want in each event. 2) It is still winter, at least where I am, so indoor and oudoor miles from any bike, trainer, stationary bike will count. Same for treadmill vs outdoor running, and pool vs open water swimming. 3) The winning team (if we have teams) will be determined by the percent of team members that reach their goal. Each participant will have the % goal completed and the team score will be the average of those percents. Simple enough. No values over 100% (except as a tie-breaker). 4) Hmm....some sort of sad thing to inflict on the losing team....how about the winners get to pick the signature line for the losing team for the month of April (other, more merciless suggestions for embarassing things to do will be considered). 5) If we have teams, send your result to your Team Captain by each Sunday night. Team captians can post the results on the Multisport Challenge Thread on Mondays. 6) People participating in the bike challenge are also welcome, if they want some incentive to not completely ditch their other workouts. 7) Since this is last minute, try to form teams and set goals by Sunday. So, who's in? I guess I can be a team captian.....hmmm....snazzy name....I don't know. I'll come up with that later if anybody decides to join my team....if we even have teams.... |

I'll captain a Team Canada if there are other Crazy Canucks interested. Have to figure out the metric equivalent of your point system ... 1 point = 100 yds/m swam = 1/4 mi run = 1 mi bike |

Extreme Veteran 466 | Subject: RE: March Multisport Challenge! I'm in. 960 points for the month. I'm in the Northeast, part of Hummin Hamsters for Feb and the Big East team for March. I suspect this will end up more an individual challenge. |

CalgaryRunner - 2006-02-28 3:40 PM Have to figure out the metric equivalent of your point system ... 1 point = 100 yds/m swam = 1/4 mi run = 1 mi bike I'd say roughly: 1 pt = 90 m swam = 400 m run = 1600 m bike Actual conversions 100yds = 91.4 m, .25mi = 402m, 1 mi = 1609 m. So the points would be a little less for metric, but you could still use round(ish) numbers. Does that work for everybody? I can edit it into the rules if necessary |

Frugal Gear Geek 2199 having fun with the kids | Subject: RE: March Multisport Challenge! Ok, I came up with this idea so I am in. Not sure how well I will do going on points, but every great idea has to start somewhere I will go for 350 points. I will either make it or have a lot of excuses Translation for those watching. 100 pts of bike 200 points of running, and somewhere, I will make up the rest. Since this seems to be a small challenge, unless we all get on a team, I think we should post our own points each week here on Wed. (since the month starts on a Wed.) Good luck to all. BTW I have no probem with a friendly wager of signatures for a month. More important is to work out the bugs of a point system before April when all the single event challenges come looking for something new |

, Texas | Subject: RE: March Multisport Challenge! My intet was 1 point = 100 yds *or* 100 meters. I think keeping track of the exact meters vs. yards would be silly for the swim. Also, the health club I attend has both a 25 yd (outdoor) and 25 meter (indoor) lap pool, so I may mix in both I'm not sure what to do for the metric run/bike. I guess it could be converted and rounded to the nearest point? I'm in on this, but I'll get my total point estimate in tomorrow. Each participant will have the % goal completed and the team score will be the average of those percents. Simple enough. No values over 100% (except as a tie-breaker). Since you are determining % completed it doesn't really matter what we choose for the metric equivalent. i.e. if we say 1 point = 100 meters and someones goal is 5,000 meters for the month then they'd say their goal is 50 points (if all they were doing was swimming). If we said 1 point = 250 meters then they'd say their goal was 20 points.... So I suggest for ease of calculating: 1 point = 100 meters (Swim) = 500 meters (run) = 1500 meters (Bike) |

Veteran 298 chicago | Subject: RE: March Multisport Challenge! oceanannie - 2006-02-28 9:52 PM Any conversion factor for time? For biking and running, I only really focus on time and when working out outside, I never really try to estimate distance? If you have some kind of idea of what pace you run and bike, you can make up a conversion factor for yourself, and then translate your minutes into points from that (i.e. "it looks like on the treadmill I average 10 minute miles, so 10 minutes is 4 points). I agree with CalgaryRunner that since we're going for % complete the exact value of the points isn't terribly important, but it's nice for comparison to keep them somewhat similar. If that doesn't work we can certainly use an arbitrary system like CalgaryRunner suggested. As long as people take one system and stick to it that should work just fine. |

Wow, I made an honest attempt at figuring out what my schedual said for this months training and came up with my number. I am ammazed at some of the 500+ point pledges this month. this is outstanding! Just currious, are what kind of races are you running this year 1/2 IM and IM's? I must say though, I wish I was not on the drainer right now, my numbers would be able to go up |

Regular 79 Kalaheo, Kauai | Subject: RE: March Multisport Challenge! Count me in.. I'm going to say 330 points.. most points from running, then swimming and then biking...It doesn't matter the breakdown at the end of the month right? Just total points received? Is this challenge starting this weekend? official end date? This is exactly what I needed and what I was planning on doing myself - but better if other people know too!

Expert 1092 Earth | Subject: RE: March Multisport Challenge! Well I am looking to train for a Sprint, and the way I came up with 875 points, was based on the following. Swim = 151 minutes or 7550 yards = 75.5 points, opps there is my math error. I was thinking 1/10 not 1/100. Running = 155 minutes or about 13 miles or 51.6 points. Biking = 328 minutes or about 82 miles or 82 points. So I should have signed up for 209 points. Looks like I am going to be a little short. |

Master 2287 Calgary, Alberta | Subject: RE: March Multisport Challenge! I may have missed a ruling on what the point system was for metric athletes so here's my goal with the breakdown. Run 136 points (68 km at 1 point per .5 km) Swim 135 points (13500 meters at 1 point per 100 meters) Total points: 271. |
