Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() On my way home from work yesterday I saw a man riding along the side of the pretty busy road. He had a nice bike and a fancy cycling outfit (compared to my Patagonia shorts and t-shirt). As he got closer I could read the writing on his outfit - it said "Cycle Smart" across his back and down his leg. Well, he might want to take advice from his clothes because he wasn't wearing a helmet!! What an idiot. I had the top down on my car and wanted so badly to shout something to him but I restrained myself. Forget getting hit by a car, imagine how hurt he could get if he just hit a pothole or something. Forget getting hit by a car, imagine how hurt he could get if he just hit a pothole or something. You should have said something to him. When I was in Tampa in Nov. with Jess and Renee, we saw several cyclists without helmets. So stupid. Then we saw a motorcycle wreck, the guy was wearing a helmet. No doubt saved his life. *shiver* |

The Original ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow- that's really stupid. I would have been tempted to yell at him for not wearing a helmet. I saw a couple riding cruisers bikes along the shoulder of a busy road this past weekend. Both not wearing helmets. They weren't riding very fast but still- they can still fall or get hit by a car! |

The parents may be proctecting their children physically by making them wear a helmet, but what happens if the parent crashes and is killed or ends up a vegetable for the rest of their life? How is that protecting your child and you think they won't be affected by it? Why do adults think they are immune to accidents but children aren't? Dumb... |

molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() there are a few guys who work at my favorite shop who ride around w/o helmets, and also favor all black clothing. i've always worn a helmet, but used to wear black all the time. it only took surgery and a bolt in my elbow for me to embrace neon orange. ![]() |

I tried to imagine that he left his helmet at a friend's and he was on his way to get it or something. |

This isn't any better, but at least where I ride I only see 3 or 4 cars and hour. |

We met a bunch of rich, retired Harley riders on our honeymoon. One guy told us if you're in a crash the only difference if you wear a helmet is an open vs. closed casket. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's aweful but it's true. It is the same if you get hit by a car on your bike but you are going faster and a motorcycle weighs a lot more than a QR Caliente. I think I have grown old because mine scares the hell out of me now and I am going to sell it one of these days. |

Depends on the severity of the crash, really. Anti-helmet folks have a point there when they're talking about huge, dramatic accidents, but in more pedestrian accidents helmets can save lives. |

Resident Curmudgeon ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've read (can't verify or provide a source) that many more head injuries could be prevented by wearing a helmet in an automobile than could possibly occur from cyclists. So how many of you preaching the gospel of mandatory helmets for cyclists also wear helmets while driving? Edit: OK found a source, that says helmet laws REDUCE frequency of cycling and tha motor vehicle use of helmets would save 17 times as many lives:
That said, having trashed three helmets, I would not be caught dead (punny boy!) on my bike without a helmet. But that's my choice, I certainly wouldn't call a cyclist stupid because he chose otherwise. Edited by the bear 2006-03-09 1:38 PM |

I know it's his choice, but I will call him stupid, my opinion at least. I think my friend who was smoking at 5:15am before our 1/2 marathon was stupid too. I think Brittney Spears was being stupid when she had her baby in her lap while driving. I think lots of people can act stupid (myself included at times of course). Anyway, the most ironic thing about it all was that his outfit said "Cycle Smart." Also, the guys I met in Montana who made the open casket comment did wear helmets, we were just discussing helmet laws I think (it was a long time ago) which made him tell me that saying. |

Despite what the general consensus here is. |

FUNNY-was this guy you talked to my HUSBAND? He and I have an ongoing debate about helmet use. He'll wear a helmet while mountain biking and snowboarding-but not on his Harley. He'll say all sorts of lame things like, "I'm not going that fast or that far" or "it ruins the experience". whatever. I think it's a Harley-cool-guy thing and I think it's incredibly stupid. He claims to don a helmet when riding "a long time". o-k. It is sort of true about the casket comment-many a high speed crash on a motorcycle would not be mitigated by wearing a helmet (shudder). I'm not giving in on this battle-he's a prince otherwise! |

Nope - these guys were grandfathers and were from Salt Lake and CA. They were hysterical. We in Glacier Park sitting at the hotel bar waiting for our room to be ready. All of a sudden a group of there rough looking guys in their Harley gear came in and sat all around us. It seemed like they were trying to get my attention to tease me a little but I dind't know why. I finally looked and they were alll wearing Billy Bob fake teeth and wanted to see what I would do. We ended up having the best time with them. It turned out they were a bunch of rich guys who just liekd to ride. They called themselves The Whiners because some of them would complain so much - "I don't want to ride in the rain. We're going how far today?" We liked them so much we sent pictures of us with them and their teeth out to our college friends as Christmas cards! PS - The Billy Bobs look so real...
