Subject: Good non-law jobs for a lawyer??

You know where this is going, right?  I've been practicing law for almost 11 years...primarily business litigation, insurance law, and  personal injury.  I'm tired of the whole litigation headache, and am looking for a new, fresh challenge.  Do any of you wise folks who may have been in the business world for a while have any good ideas for a  "second career" that would be good for an experienced attorney with a business undergrad degree who is tired of practicing law?

Because I have been in a law firm atmosphere for the past decade, I am a little out of touch with the corporate world, so I'm just not sure what is out there for someone with my experience.  If it helps any, I love to talk (public speaking) and I love to write.

I am an insurance agent and have been to countless seminars put on by insurance carriers.  Some of the real highlights have been when their in-house attorneys discuss various items that come up for them to consider.

It would appear from the outside that many of the carriers have departmentalized legal teams, some for litigation and others for claims assesment, etc.  I work primarily with health and disability insurance, so I'm not talking about the same type of stuff you've been fighting from the other side...well...maybe in a way I am, but distinguishing if someone has lied on a health insurance application, or is cheating you on a disability claim is a lot different than personal injury work.

Maybe this is part of what you want "out" of, but thought I'd pose it as a possibility

One of the partners in the ad agency that I work at is a former attorney. He was a lobbiest for the for an industry in which we have a lot of clients, so he was/is well connected. With your experience, you might do well to go to work in the headquarters for an insurance agency. One of my high school classmates is a lawyer for an elevator company. They get sued every time someone gets stuck in an elevator, so it keeps him busy. Another classmate works for a huge highway construction firm. He has a law degree that he uses when he's bidding on government contracts and that sort of thing. I think that there would be a lot of uses for a law degree in the business world.

Actually, the in-house insurance idea is a good one.  Given my experience on both sides of personal injury law, and the fact that I enjoy claims investigation, etc., it may be a good fit.

Funny you should ask that question John, even with a winky face.  I had a casual conversation with a headhunter friend of mine a year ago, and he told me "Why would anyone want to hire a lawyer...much less one that has been doing the same thing for 10 years?"  Made me wonder if I have compartmentalized myself so much that I've made myself unmarketable in any other field.

Banks/Broker-Dealers are always looking for attorneys particularly in the compliance area. I'm not an attorney in compliance, trust me I know!

Yep, I remember that Bill.  And in fact, my "dream job" would be to open something similar in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.  I even named it already.. "Texas Tri-Sports."  The problem is, with no capital behind me, and a six figure student loan debt, this particular dream is kinda like wanting to be an astronaut or a movie star as a kid.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. 11 years as a prosecutor and experiencing serious burn out. But what else am I qualified to do?

Have you given any thought to teching? Either law or criminology? Other than that, if you think of anything let me know.

Actually, I think I would love teaching, but given my current debt situation, I don't think I could survive on teacher's pay.

Yeah, join the club..........About the same boat, 11 years or so

My problem is I don't like litigation but I like the guys I work for.  Many bosses are a holes, mine are decidedly not.  Makes up for some of the c**p.  Actually for a lot of it.

I actually took a year off after fifth year and traveled for 6 months.  Now THAT's a job I liked

They always say "you can do so many things with a law degree......."  My ideal job has nothing to do with law (of course, that's about all I know about it :^ )

HMMMMM, three trial lawyers all burned out...the transactional guys never get burned out cashing their paychecks. I'm not going to lement my life because I am certainly blessed, but finding something with a little less pressure would be kinda nice.

I had no idea there were so many of us lawyers here.

In my 8 years of practice I have known many lawyers who have asked this question. (I seem to be one of the few lawyers who actually likes being a litigator) Not one of them has come up with a good answer to this question.

Fact is, if you are like most lawyers and had to take out student loans, for the first 15 years after law school you have to practice law in order to make enough money to pay loans. After that nobody wants to hire you for non-law jobs because you have been pigeon holed as a lawyer.

The closest I have seen people come to finding non-legal work is going in house at a corporate client. This isn't really a switch out of law though because the positions are inevitably in the corprate legal department.

One of the lies they tell you when entering law school is: "There is so much you can do with a JD." That's not really true.

I know this doesn't help, but let us all know if you come up with the solution.

Wow, in practice for 10 years, and still a six figure student loan debt...you and I are in the same boat, buddy. I already have my coaching business named, "Steel City Endurance", but I doubt I'll be able to pay back my loans with coaching!

My BIL is a litigation attorney; he was suffering burnout after around 10 years. He pondered chucking his legal career and becoming a truck driver instead. Instead, he tookup sky-diving (EVERY weekend) and he changed his mind about becoming a truck driver. He's still a litigator and partner in a firm.

Not sure how that story might help you, but there it is.

This would still be in the law field but: mediation = doing good.
My pops is getting out of litigation right now and starting into mediation. There are a lot of folks that become mediators that aren't lawyers/didn't go to law school, but your background will be a great asset.

Also: working at a policy think tank, policy analyst, university/state school professor in similar subjects, or..
write a book - all good lawyers/retired lawyers have a book in the wings
If you think of something good, please pass it on - I have several folks (including myself) in the law field interested in other opportunities that will use in some way this skill set. good luck!

Hey OldAg and the rest of you lawyers, just out of curiosity, how many hours are you putting in each week? How much did you put in fresh out of law school? I'm getting ready for law school, so I'm trying to inform myself as much as I can about that stuff. I ask every lawyer that I meet. Thanks! Oh, and sorry for hijacking the thread, even though it was a "little hijack"

I always said I'd only practice until my student loans were paid off.... welll, that was two years ago, why do I still do it?

Several reasons:
Inertia - As I said, I have good bosses, it's fairly comfortable, I wear jeans to the office, etc.

Money - I can travel, buy dive equipment, buy tri stuff and not worry about paying the rent.  I'm not rich, hell I can't even afford to own a house in LA, but it's better than digging ditches

Sometimes it is fun - winning that motion, cross examining the idiot expert, etc etc....

Not tied to a 9 to 5 schedule. Sure, sometimes it's 8 to 10, but usualyl it's closer to a regular workday, and I can schedule my hours as I see fit (calendar permitting)

Fear - of what else is out there, of not earning enough, of stepping out of this role.

The one big huge downside to litigation is lack of control over a long term schedule.  Motions get filed that have to be responded to, trials get set, depositions noticed.  Usually that works out, I've had to cancel one vacation in 10 years or so, so that's not so bad.

I take that back, the biggest drawback i a hole opposing counsel (none of which I assuem are in this thread).  My fatehr was a lawyer and used to talk about how you could have oral and handshake agreements with OC.  Now the rule is never trust anyone.  I try to practice like my father would have.

The one word that helps me get through it all is:  Perspective.  It's just a job (a pretty stressful one at times, but what isn't?)

Re: transactional.... I've done a little bit here and there, agreements and such, and find it boring.  I also knwo a couple in house lawyers, it's not always the nirvana we firm lawyers make it out to be.

However, if I could make just half of what I do at something I love, underwater photography, for instance, I'd jump in a fat second.  But that ain't happening.

Chris
