Swim
Comments: Not a good swim for me. It was 6 minutes slower than usual and seemed to be about the normal effort. It was the first open water swim (race or training) this year so I must of had some sighting difficulties:) I don't know what happened. Lots of open space without many people around and I just went slower than usual. What would you do differently?: More swim work earlier in the year. Transition 1
Comments: Spent WAY TO MUCH TIME IN T1. It was cold in the morning, especially after swimming in 60 degree water and being wet so I decided to put on arm warmers and gloves for the ride. I was glad that I did after getting on the bike but I was not happy with how long it took to get them on. What would you do differently?: Put on gloves and arm warmers on the bike. Bike
Comments: Hilly and rough roads. The Hills were tall and long and seemed to roll on and on. There was a tough hill about half way in the course that came after a long section of slight, rough uphill. The big downhill towards the end was a blast. I think I got up to 44mph. This is not a big man's bike course. This course favors the light and small hill climbers. What would you do differently?: Start doing the ATC ride earlier in the year. Saturday's didn't work for me until now due to all the run workouts. This course was hard for this early in the season. Transition 2
Comments: Much better What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: I felt terrible the first 2 miles for two reasons: 1. I could not feel my toes for the first .5 miles and then they started to sting. 2. I was running way too fast (8:48 for the first mile). I had planned to run 9:30's for the whole race). It's hard to slow down when lots of people are passing you but this is a "C" race for me and I had to back-off. What would you do differently?: Maybe add some more hill repeats during the end of the run season. Post race
Warm down: Waded into the cold 60 degree water and drank a cold Alamo draft beer while talking to Charles about the race. We also tried to eat a hamburger on a park bench. What limited your ability to perform faster: 230 lbs Event comments: I liked the race (except for the shirts- they were a lame baby blue color) and I could have done without the rough roads. However, I loved the cold water and the double loop run course was cool. I'd do this race again but start doing hills (Damn loop or the ATC long ride) starting in January. Woke-up early and drove the 1:20 minutes from Round Rock to Canyon Lake. Easy drive and easy to find the race and walk to transition.
Almost none, 5 minutes of swimming in the 60 degree water.
