Canyon Lake, Texas
United States
Seidel Productions
60F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 00m 44s
Overall Rank = 116/173
Age Group = Clydesdales
Age Group Rank = 4/7
Pre-race routine:

Woke-up early and drove the 1:20 minutes from Round Rock to Canyon Lake. Easy drive and easy to find the race and walk to transition.
Event warmup:

Almost none, 5 minutes of swimming in the 60 degree water.
Swim
  • 28m 17s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a good swim for me. It was 6 minutes slower than usual and seemed to be about the normal effort. It was the first open water swim (race or training) this year so I must of had some sighting difficulties:) I don't know what happened. Lots of open space without many people around and I just went slower than usual.
What would you do differently?:

More swim work earlier in the year.
Transition 1
  • 04m 33s
Comments:

Spent WAY TO MUCH TIME IN T1. It was cold in the morning, especially after swimming in 60 degree water and being wet so I decided to put on arm warmers and gloves for the ride. I was glad that I did after getting on the bike but I was not happy with how long it took to get them on.
What would you do differently?:

Put on gloves and arm warmers on the bike.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 32s
  • 27.96 miles
  • 19.39 mile/hr
Comments:

Hilly and rough roads. The Hills were tall and long and seemed to roll on and on. There was a tough hill about half way in the course that came after a long section of slight, rough uphill. The big downhill towards the end was a blast. I think I got up to 44mph. This is not a big man's bike course. This course favors the light and small hill climbers.
What would you do differently?:

Start doing the ATC ride earlier in the year. Saturday's didn't work for me until now due to all the run workouts. This course was hard for this early in the season.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Much better
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 00m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt terrible the first 2 miles for two reasons: 1. I could not feel my toes for the first .5 miles and then they started to sting. 2. I was running way too fast (8:48 for the first mile). I had planned to run 9:30's for the whole race). It's hard to slow down when lots of people are passing you but this is a "C" race for me and I had to back-off.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe add some more hill repeats during the end of the run season.
Post race
Warm down:

Waded into the cold 60 degree water and drank a cold Alamo draft beer while talking to Charles about the race. We also tried to eat a hamburger on a park bench.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

230 lbs

Event comments:

I liked the race (except for the shirts- they were a lame baby blue color) and I could have done without the rough roads. However, I loved the cold water and the double loop run course was cool. I'd do this race again but start doing hills (Damn loop or the ATC long ride) starting in January.

Why didn't you try to meet up with all the BTers?

You're a sicko for liking that water. I think most of us had breathing problems because it was so cold!

Good job.

I was thinking the same thing after I wrote my race report. I haven't been on BT much during the offseason and just started getting back into the swing of logging my workouts and race reports. I'd love to meet everyone. I know I've done some races with others on BT, especially Doug.

I'm not doing Cactus (Too many issues last year so I'll give them another year to fix the race issues or go away). I do plan on doing CapTex, the Ironhead series in Dallas, Buffalo Springs and my "A" race of the year: Ironman Florida.

I'm slow but I'm steady!

I think that cold water screwed everyone's times up. I know my form was horrible for the whole race. I'm also a bit suspicious that the course was a bit long.

Sorry we missed you down there. It was a lot of fun getting all the BTers together and it beat the hell out of driving down race morning.

We should have a pretty good contingent at CapTex this year. I think most of the folks from this week-end will be doing it.

Looks like a good solid race - way to go! If you were only "6 minutes slower than usual" on that swim, you were SPEEDING. Great job.

Hope we get to meet up at CapTex! Have you surfed over to the "Texas" forum? It's now under "who's training and racing - US" - that's how we keep track of who's doing what race. As you can see from the pics in Bill's and Dennis's albums (so far), everyone's a little insane but nobody bites. Ot at least nobody was biting anybody before I retired early for the evening.

I liked this race too - the roads were a little rough, but the lake's beauty and the awesome organizers and volunteers more than made up for that in my book. As a behind-the-packer, I'm braced for abandoned water stations on T2 and other kinds of neglect. Not this race - I had volunteers AND Nick's people AND all of the BTers there for me until the end, for which I'm grateful.

See you at the races!

Cant wait to meet you at a race.  What's your next one?  Will you be doing Cactus challenge?  I guess i can answer my own questions by just looking at your page.  I'm glad someone loved the water.  We'll have to meet up for a long ride sometime- I'm in Austin.  Keep training!

Great race.  I am also a Clyde, and it was a really tough race for me.  The cold water meant disaster on my swim, and my bike split was my worst split of any ride I've ever done.  Too much hill action for early season, especially for someone who has been riding in Brownsville!!

But, I still had fun and enjoyed the company of all the BTers.  Hope to see you at CapTex.

Thanks guys! I'll start checking the site more often and get on the Texas forum part.

OldAg, I hope that isn't the year you graduated, cause I graduated from A&M in '89 and that would make me an even older Ag!

Keep up the training and see everyone at CapTex.

Uh-oh Mike. I think you've earned yourself a new nickname there: you might be Even Older Ag.

Great race, Mike!  Sorry we didn't cross paths at the race!  Like Celeste said, most of us don't bite...
