It followed a sting operation in a random suburb (I think in CA) where undercover agents would pose as 13-14 y.o. boys and girls and invite the predators over to "their house". In the one episode that I saw, almost 60 men came to the house in one day!!! And that's just one suburb!!! I guess I had no idea there were so many perverts out there...very scary. By the way, most of the people caught in the sting got much lighter sentences than you would imagine...also very scary. |

It is shocking the types of people that get caught in these stings. FBI once caught a naval commander using his Pentagon computer to prey on children. As an aside as parents there are things you can do to help prevent your children from falling prey to these predators; 1. Understand that your job as a parent is to protect your child above all else. 2. Your child doesn't have "privacy" rights when it comes to your parenting. I cant tell you how many parents of victimized children have said to me "I didn't want to go into his/her room and snoop around because I didn't want to invade their privacy." B.S. Parent first, friend last! 3. Keep home computers in an open spot like the family room or living room, not in the child's own room. 4. Check the history on your computer frequently. If you find the history being erased often be suspicious. 5. Don't have a web camera. Why does a child need a web cam? They are nothing but trouble. 6. be familiar with the web/chat room/IM short hand lingo. 7. Check on your kid when they are using the computer. Go up and look over their shoulder. 8. Be involved in your kids lives, know their friends, know where they are going, know what they are doing. 9. Set boundries and enforce them 10. Be vigilant! 11. If a problem arises remove the computer entirely. 12. If your gut tells you there is a problem with the computer or any particular individual that your child is hanging around, follow your gut. As a parent the response "Because I said so" is perfectly acceptable when you are talking about protecting your child from harm. Oh and on a happy note in the prison system you can lie, cheat steal and murder and be accepted by your fellow inmates. But one thing even the most henious murderer despises is someone that hurts a child, especially the sexual exploitation of a child. |

I read it as some Admin idiot hired the idiot child molestor. If the guy was that dumb enough to give out his name, position, address and *three* phone numbers in the process of committing felonies, then I'm guessing his idiocy might have surfaced somewhere along the way, like maybe in the performance of his job. I mean, we make fun of the incompetency of criminals that leave their wallets with ID at crime scenes, for instance. What this guy did was orders of magnitude stupider. But whatever. ASA22 - 2006-04-05 12:50 PM + Parent first, friend last! + As a parent the response "Because I said so" is perfectly acceptable when you are talking about protecting your child from harm. so true. children will have plenty of friends in their life, but only the parent can be the parent. be a respectful, communicative, and available parent - but still be the parent. there seems to be a trend of parents trying to keep their children entertained constantly, either to keep them 'happy' or keep them 'busy'. boredom and a lack of technology fosters inner strength, creativity, and resourcefulness. as for 'because i said so'...we do say that sometimes, but i think how you deal with boundaries needs to fit your child's personality. our daughter is a very curious kid. if we don't explain things, she'll just want to understand and push that much more. it doesn't come from a place of disobedience (at least most of the time), but from wanting to understand her world. she also doesn't accept bs answers from us, she wants the truth. sometimes it may be harsh, but then she understands. when we talk about running out into the street, we've said 'you could get hit and sqauashed and die'. that might really scare some 5 year olds, but that's the kind of explaination that works with her. not sure how it will be with our other daughter, but she is much more mischievous, so she may be our 'because i said so' kid.  one of my favorite parenting phrases is 'freedom within limits'. kids do need a sense of freedom and a sense of choice and responsibilty if they are ever able to develop their own 'moral compass' (not my favorite word, but it works here). control their environment, set their boundaries, and within those limits they can make as many choices as they want. its like making them lunch. they have the right to pick between water, soy milk, or cow milk, but they don't have unlimited freedom or the choice to drink coke or beer, have ice cream for lunch, etc. |

Yes it was. I completely forgot about that guy. There was another guy who was a high school teacher who actually went back to the classroom after he made bail, and before the school found out about it...talk about scary. |

(It would also behoove people to realize that not all government employees are political appointees. Chances are this guy was a career civil servant). On April 15 I'll be running in the 8K "Stop the Silence" run against child abuse in Washington D.C. Hope to see other BT'ers there. |
