Well as 50 is on the horizon it is time to do what I have thought of since college. Competing and completing a triathlon. Have not run in a couple of years or swam much, but have done some spinning and weight lifting along with aerobics. Looking to drop some weight, improve my health and have the satisfaction of finishing. Along with increased confidence in what I can accomplish.

Looking for a bike that will not break the bank along with the other gear that is necessary to train and compete. I am sure that I will be asking lots of questions.

Welcome,I started this craziness in June of this year at the ripe old age of 53. Other than weight training for the past while losing weight, I had almost no athletic background. It is a lot of fun! Personally, I like Specialized bikes, but you can find some great buys on used bikes. BT is a great place for for advice and support.Have fun!!

1961 was a great year. 50 here too. Welcome. I would recommend going to a bike sotre to find out what bikes are  agood fit for you. You don't have to buy a bie there. You can use the information you learn there to buy a bike on Craigslist. (A good bike fit is one of the BEST investments!)

Welcome to BT!  I will be 51 later this month.  I did my first triathlon way back in 1986.  I'm mentioning this because back then there were no tri-bikes and all the gadgets triathlon has today.  You really don't need spend a lot to get started.  I started out on a road bike, helment, running shorts and running shoes using cages.  You can invest more (or not) as you discover what works for you.  Have fun!

Welcome to BT!

I did my first Tri this year on my 50th birthday. Very cool way to spend the morning. I used an old mountain bike for that race since I wasn't really sure if I'd like triathlon or not.

But like many others on this site, I became absolutely hooked! Picked up an entry level road bike and found I really love riding almost as much as distance running. I got a Felt F-95 and have been very happy with it.

Best of luck to you!

Post in the NC forum Tom. There may be some interest in a relay there.

I turned 50 last Friday and did my 4th Ironman race following day.

Tris are great way to celebrate birthday milestones and also in tri aging up is a good thing.

Welcome and good luck!

Congrats on your fiftieth birthday's everyone.  In the words of my wife's Ukrainian grandfather,"You young yet!"  I wish I had started when I was 50.

The old guys I ride with at times leave me in the dust without breaking a sweat and I turned 61 last week.

Carry on, never quit.

Turned 53 in August and just getting back in shape after a 20+ year layoff.  Did body building, running, tri's and biathlons in my past.

Word of advice.  Be careful especially with the run and swim (injuries).  Slow and build up.  Age is a "B"  Recover time is a bit longer than in younger years (just my personal experience).  Running: do walk/run to begin and take it slow.  Caution with the swim when using weights.  Just blew out both of my shoulders (shoulder impingent syndrom) because did too much, too soon...thought I was young again.  Having to rest, but I'll be ok.  Make sure you get enough rest and sleep.

Best of luck.

Welcome. from another 1960 baby.

Did my first tri a couple of years back and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.  be careful though, it can become both expensive and all consuming!!

Cool thread - i will turn 50 iun july and am looking forward to the new age group.  For me, being a lifelong runner, fifty has been a real motivator  for almost a year now.  I embrace the new age group and challenges.  Good luck to every one and enjoy life

x2.  did my first tris this year (sprint, HIM and IM) after a "lifetime" of being a couch potato.  The support here is great!  Recovery time at this age sucks though.

A 1962'er here looking forward to aging up next year.  Not that it seems like the 50-54 AG is much slower around here.  One fun part for starting late is that we get to PR all the time for a while!
