Pre-race routine:

Got to sleep in until 6:15. Drank some OJ and had a granola bar on the way to the race. Check-in was easy. They were adding an extra rack to transition, and I got a nice spot at the front of the rack. Saw and talked with a lot of people I'd met before -- William, Andy (apw0397), Tommy (zia_cyclist), Aaron (JeepFleeb), Paul, Dave Young.
Event warmup:

Short jog (.4mi) and got in the lake for a brief swim; however, my wave wasn't starting until 8:25. Water temp was very comfortable with the wetsuit.
Swim
  • 29m 37s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

Overall felt pretty good. Was in a better rhythm by the second lap and felt like I was catching water better. Did some drafting, but don't know if I was doing it well. Chased down a swimmer on the final stretch which felt good. Apparently I swam alongside William for a good part of the second lap, if not more. (Sorry for the bumping, William!)
What would you do differently?:

Didn't think much about my balance b/c of wetsuit. Need to be cautious of this, as next race may not be wetsuit-legal.
Transition 1
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Getting suit off wasn't quite as fast as I'd like -- a little stuck on heels, but not badly. Also, I was a little slow getting socks on. Since there was no bike, I could just grab my HRM and put it on during the run.
What would you do differently?:

More practice with wetsuit?
Run
  • 50m 54s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Took a little while to feel loose on the run. I'm used to having the bike portion to get blood flowing in the legs. Was feeling better by mile 2. My time for the first lap was a little slower than I had hoped. Also, starting the second lap, I finally saw more people in front of me, so I picked up the pace and worked on chasing them down. Was passed by a few fast guys, and managed to pass several myself.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on getting the pace up a little earlier in the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a bagel and some Gatorade. Helped Merry call numbers to record finisher details, and talked with various BT folks. Met Haley (Comet) and Emily (emilyindallas). Had to leave before the awards.

Event comments:

Everything started right on time. Only ~70 people were registered two weeks ago, so Merry (the RD) planned on manual timing. Number of racers jumped up to 170 by race day, but it was too late to arrange chip timing. No real post-race except snacks (bagels, kolaches, oranges, bananas, apples, Gatorade) and talking to other racers.
Too bad the age groups were 10 years. If there had been enough racers for the normal 30-34 grouping, I would have had hardware. (Yes, I'm blissfully ignoring the fact that more racers means there would be more in my age group faster than me.) All-in-all, it was good for a small race, and nice to have some Olympic-distance open water practice.

Great race!

I am not happy about the lack of chip timing and the lack of voluteers/marked course.

It was nice to meet you and too bad you weren't there for the BT picture.

An anonymous BT quote re: you not being there: "yeah, well, Davids a loser. But only because he beat me."

I'll claim that quote. I don't mind.

David,

Nice race.  I look forward to seeing you at more events.  And we'll have to get together for some more training rides/runs.
