Subject: RE: Protien Shakes or Chocolate Milk? Chocolate milk. Hands down. Unless when you say protein shake you refer to one with carbs in it as well. There's studies showing no difference between the two (a carb/protein/fat shake vs. chocolate milk) from a recovery standpoint. I wish I remembered the specifics. |

Extreme Veteran 516 | Subject: RE: Protien Shakes or Chocolate Milk? Vanilla protien shake w/scoop of glutamine w/milk and banana, yum. I also have little kids and they would just drink the chocolate milk up, otherwise I could do that occasionally. I do like that that the protien shake provides extra protein though. Patsy |

Well, both are hype. Sweet recovery shakes with sugar infused protein powder or chocolate milk are recovery fantasies hoisted by nutrition companies and or articles as an excuse to have something sweet and yummy after a workout. I used to do the whole protein shake thing and then discovered it was just crap calories I somehow justified eating. Not I down a liter of coconut water and eat some regular food and feel great without all the stuff I don't need. |

I find it absolutely amazing that coconut water has found a home with the yogis and hoipolloi. I'll be on record as predicting that the coconut bubble will burst, and we'll be on to mango, pomegranite, strawberry or whatever water. If the coconut taste does it for you, booyah, but it's water. If you ascribe something more to coconut water than that, it's marketing and stuff you don't need, as poo-poohed in the post. Hello, goodbye, especially at $2/L, minimum. And for me, chocolate milk works wonders, with other real food. |

Have fun with 3x the sugar content and low quality fats. It's not a fad, it's just math. If you take nutrition and recovery and health and competitiveness seriously, coconut water wins hands down.Magnesium and potassium are KEY to endurance recovery and chocolate milk has nothing. Sure it's pricey, and so are a lot of "recovery" drinks made, but it's at least natural and legit. Chocolate milk is milk, which is fine, and added flavored sugar crap, which is not. I stand by my assertion that chocolate milk is an excuse, not a recovery product. Edited by bryancd 2012-03-18 7:25 PM |

Bryan, what is it that is in the Coconut Milk that makes it a good recovery drink. Looking at the ingredients doesn't seem like there is a whole lot to it. I'm asking cause I really don't know what I should be looking for or not looking for when it comes to ingredients. I always thought I needed protein to help muscles rebuild and recover. |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Protien Shakes or Chocolate Milk? Protein is way over stressed as required for recovery. Much more important are electrolytes and carbohydrate and eve then, only after really big workouts. First is hydration and electrolyte depletion that needs to be addressed. The VAST majority to AG triathletes would be better served looking to natural, normal foods as post workout options then chocolate milk or fancy, sweet protein shakes. That's assuming they want to effectively manage their recovery and weight. If not, pound down whatever floats your boat but denial is not a river in Egypt. Call a spade a spade, so to speak. The entire concept of the "glycogen window" is being tossed out by better research and studies. Hydrate and look to replenish electrolytes first, eat a PB & J, and call it a recovery, you'll be better off. Avoid sport drinks as much as possible while not training as well, they are loaded with crap carbohydrate and sugar. Quality fats over bad fats, some but not a lot of protein. We eat so much more protein then our bodies can ever hope to absorb, we end up getting too many calories from protein and not enough from good fats and carbohydrate. Look at the nutritional charts I posted, which one looks more balanced? Which once is more natural? Which one provides a greater variety of nutrition? Edited by bryancd 2012-03-18 7:38 PM |

why dont you show us some of these studie,s that counter the man other studies showing the benefit of addressing the anabolic window? The idea of High GI carb plus quick digesting protein is to get it to your muscles quicker, so you can recover in time for the next workout. This allows more volume of work, which guarantees results.... Edited by synthetic 2012-03-18 9:44 PM |
