I didn't realize just how far you'd come--awesome! I thought about you so much in my OZ week as I seemed to spend all my free time with wondrous diversity of life forms--Melbourne Aquarium, Melbourne Museum, Healseville Sanctuary--I was babbling like crazy about my friend who is a zookeeper when we all were traipsing around the Sanctuary |

Can I? Ohh Ohh pick me, pleeaassee CAR-la Name, rank and serial number! Or just talk about peeing ... we like that. I'm Carla. Happily married with a 7 year old, 2 weimeriners and a cat. I've been around BT for 3 or 4 years or so. Started cycling to maintain some level of fitness. Dabbled in jogging and have no problems with swimming. Found this sight one day while working procrastinating and thought I'd give a sprint a tri. I fell in love with the sport. After a couple of sprints the first year, I completed a marathon the next year along with a couple of metric century rides. Last year and so far this year have been slim pickins' on the races, but I try to fit in some training where I can. In December of '11, my doc gave me a swift kick in the pants and told me to get my act together as far as eating was concerned. Basically, the only risk factor I didn't have for heart disease was the smoking. So, 4 months later, I've lost 24 pounds and have no intention of stopping until I lose 24 more. Excited to meet everyone and soak up some of this motivation for training!!! Flipper taps to all |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - Open TriAya - 2012-04-03 1:48 AM Welcome to the Yanti and Salty Manatees! We're all mentors and mentees, but manatees sounds more fun. We'd love to have you no matter how preliminary or advanced you are in multi/endurance sports. YANTI (TriAya) Growing up in Indonesia, I swam with the national and high school teams. In the U.S, I coached/competed in martial arts at the world level, but after an injury became sedentary and eventually morbidly obese. Fast forward … a student suckered me into doing a charity marathon—then I learned how to ride a bike and picked swimming back up! After 15 years in the States, I've been back in Indonesia for 3 years, mostly on the paradise island of Bali, where I've started a triathlon club and coaching. Family status: I'm 35, strange and single, have a black Lab who's smarter than I am and trains the other dog and cats to outsmart me, too. We call it the Funny Farm here. Current training: Unstructured recovery training for a couple weeks, then high-volume HIM training for a few months, bridging to IM training in September. Last year's races (2011/early 2012): Bali International Triathlon (hit by a taxi, crashed on the bike, still finished!), placed 2nd at the Bali 10K Ocean Swim, and got to 160km on the bike at IM Melbourne when I was pulled for hypothermia. 2012 Races Still Planned: * Bali International Marathon (half or 10K, April) * Bali International Triathlon (June) * Bali 10K Ocean Swim (July) * Metaman Triathlon: half-iron in Indonesia (September) * IM Western Australia (December) Weight loss: I'm down about 150 lbs from my peak weight. Experience, encouragement, empathy, and EXTREME FUN are what I offer you. This is my 9th season as a mentor, and I've done dozens of endurance races all over the world. I also worked as a researcher, writer/editor, and trainer for a global fitness and sports company for several years, so I'm pretty keyed into sports physiology and endurance coaching. I have the dubious distinction of being BT's top poster, but I also read all the forum threads, BT news, articles, programs, lots of blogs, and other endurance forums, news, and research. Above all, I want to help you reach your fitness and endurance goals, whatever they may be, and pack the utmost joy into our journeys. was always active as a kid but in “weird” sports: hockey, state pole-vaulter, snowboarder, more hockey in college. College ended, life got REAL (who knew) and being in an unhappy spot, I made a change and began running a little. A friend talked me into a tri, then last year was my first year of real racing but holy crap, what a year! I did 20 events ranging from 5Ks/sprint tris and Ragnar Relay and my first marathon, at which I qualified for Boston. Family status: I am totally TAKEN! We have 2 cats and a pug, Stevie, whom we adopted when she was 5 and I LOVE HER LIKE A CHILD. Current training: I’m full-on into marathon running, with swimming and cycling for cross-training. I have a pretty lofty goal for marathoning [Yanti edit: she's going to be one of the best in the country. That is all ... for now.] I am breaking my running into two 24-month cycles, with two weeks recovery between. Within each cycle is recovery, rebuilding, volume, strength and taper phase. 2012 Races planned: * Lilac Bloomsday Run (May) * Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, Portland (May) * Light at the End of the Tunnel Marathon (July) * Danskin Triathlon, Seattle (August) * Portland Half Marathon (October) * New York City Marathon (November)d I’ll also do a ton of 5 and 10Ks but those aren’t planned yet. What I want to give to this mentor group is keeping sport and competition fun, and a sense of balance. I work very hard to achieve my time and placement goals, but I still want to enjoy life, make time for my family, and inspire others to do the same, by doing the kind of training and being the kind of athlete and person who's a role model, not just an achiever. I'm well-read in endurance running and will be getting a coaching certification. Finally, I am a super cheerleader who's very good at checking in on the Manatees and lifting your spirits and/or kicking your butt, whatever the case of need.
Hi all, My name is Kirsten and I would be honored to join the manatees! I was very impacted by Yanti's attitude towards her IM experience. I have read many of your posts as well, and others' posts about you, and would love to have someone like you as a support in my journey! Family status: Common Law, 5 years. 3 dogs (Staffordshire Bull Terriers) and 2 cats. Partner does agility with dogs, so we get to support each other in respective endeavours. *North Shore Sprint, May 21, Vancouver, BC *Lee's Trail Tri Sprint, May 24, Vancouver, BC (Doing this one for fun to do with a friend) *Subaru Victoria Olympic, June 17, Victoria, BC *Calgary HIM, July 29, Calgary, AB I am so new to this, and I want to learn as much as I can. Partner does agility with dogs, so we get to support each other in respective endeavours. I got into cycling and then triathlon because (1) Hannah the lab did agility with me. She had an ACL injury and was rehabbed and retired. (2) Emma the golden did not want to do agility. She is not what you call a high drive dog. She wanted to visit her Public. I started cycling and then cycling and running and then why not the whole thing? In the meantime, Em grew up. She might make a different choice now but I did agility with her and then my husband tried and same thing. *Calgary HIM, July 29, Calgary, AB The day after Vineman! A busy Manatee weekend for sure! |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - Open ok, i'm back; here's my bio: Family Status: Somewhat single with a big goofy german shepherd who loves to run with me. Most races I have b/w 1-4 family members competing with me. That always makes the race more enjoyable. To date, however, I have not gotten any of them to want to do anything longer then a sprint tri and a HM. Current Training: About a month ago I started Endurance Nation's free Fastcamp training. In very short order I pulled my hamstring pretty badly and have not been able to do any run training, so I've been trying to be diligent about the bike and swim workouts. There are about 4 more weeks of fastcamp, after that I'll have to figure out what to do. Last year races (fall 2011, to date 2012): I did a couple of sprint tris and my first HIM in the fall. So far this year I've done a HM, a Spartan Race and this past weekend I did the classic distance Nautica Southbeach tri. 2012 Planned Races: Um, none. However, I'm sure I will do 2-3 sprints (maybe an oly) and am trying to decide which fall HIM i want to do. I also think that I will squeeze a marathon in sometime in the fall. Weight loss: I always have about 5 lbs that I'd love to lose, but do nothing to make it happen. In fact, when I'm done writing this I will be getting some ice cream
I'm looking forward to the continued manatee nutiness! |
