Pre-race routine:

Up at 4 am to pack car and drive down to the race with Deanne. Out the door @ 4:30 and made it to the race site by 6 am which was just what I wanted. The story of the morning was the bugs. There were thousands and thousand of black flies just waiting to munch on exposed skin. Super annoying and super gross. Had some problems with my wheel cover which took 20 minutes to fix, but other than that it was a smooth morning.
Event warmup:

Swam around for 5 minutes in between waves.
Swim
  • 20m 17s
  • 1408 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a pretty solid swim. I found some feet before the first turn buoy and just stuck on them the entire time. Rounding the last turn buoy we caught a bunch of people from another wave, and it was pretty much a free for all. I got out of the water, and Deanne said that I was in 6th in my wave, a little over 2 minutes down on first.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

4th best T1 in the race despite taking the time to put on socks and shoes because there's a long run on gravel from transition to the mount line.
Bike
  • 1h 32m 49s
  • 41.06 miles
  • 26.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Out-rode the second best bike split by over 8 minutes. I probably started out a little too strong because I wanted to real everybody in front of me in, and when I caught first place 15 minutes into the ride, I liked my chances for the race. Averaged 302 watts/26.9 mph for the first half and 285 watts/26.2 mph for the second lap. Eased off in the second half because I wanted to make sure I was going to be able to run ok.
What would you do differently?:

Start out a little slower.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

10th overall T2. Ran in my shoes back over the gravel to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 01m 42s
  • 9.24 miles
  • 06m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

I saw Deanne a half mile into the run, and she said nobody else had come in off the bike for 6 minutes so I knew I had at least a 6 minute lead at that point. I decided to keep it "comfortably hard" to the turn around, see what kind of lead I had and adjust from there. I knew going in the run course was longer than the 8.8 advertised miles, but I was still kind of surprised to go all the way out to over 4.6 before the turn around. I didn't see anyone for 4 minutes, meaning I had an 8 minute lead! I decided to slow down and run something closer to 7 minute pace because that would mean someone would have to run 5 minute pace to catch me. My left hammy cramped at mile 5.5, but it passed quickly and I was able to resume running pretty well. Crossed the line in 1st place in just under 3 hours!
What would you do differently?:

Bring some salt pills.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around and cheering on other finishers.

Event comments:

Stuck around for awards to pick up the 1st place medal :)

Congratulations on a well executed race. It must be nice to be able to purposefully slow because your closest opponent must run 5min/miles...Nice transition times, too.

Get that cramping issue solved, IMLP is a lot longer race and muscle cramps will not be allowed. And that occurred at 60 degrees...hmmm.

Great swim ('average' for you)

Fantastic bike

Strong run-well paced, esp at the end

Those power bike workouts must be paying dividends. Great race!

Congrats on the win and thanks for sharing your race report! That's a killer bike split and great race. Did you measure all the distances with a Garmin? It makes me very happy that the run course was long...I couldn't figure out why I ran a bit slower than I expected.
