| Regular 272 Houston | Subject: INJURY FORCES KASTOR OUT OF OLYMPIC TRIALS Deena Kastor is hurt. She is not going to run. I am so bummed. I saw her at the Olympic Trials Marathon. She did so well ( 6th) Deena Kastor's quest to make a fourth Olympic team came to an end yesterday when the 39 year-old Olympic Marathon bronze medalist decided that painful back spasms had caused her to miss so much training that being prepared for next Friday's 10,000m Olympic Trials race in Eugene, Ore., would be impossible. She admitted that she had been unable to run or even cross-train for the last two weeks. "I was so excited with how everything was going," Kastor told Race Results Weekly in a telephone interview. Women's 1,500 - Uceny Men's 1,500 - Lamong This is going to be a fantastic meet! I'll be there for the first two days to watch the Eaton, Hardee, Clay smack down in the decathlon and also the 10,000 meters. I love getting back to Eugene to watch a good meet. Although I'm still bitter that the six years I lived there were mostly the dark years when Smith was UO coach, t&f was on the down slide in Eugene, and there wasn't much t&f to watch other than the Pre meet. I'm very envious of t&f fans who have lived in Eugene the last few years as it has re-established itself as Track Town. Anyway, I digress. |

LL: Yes, the 5,000 comes first, so I'm putting all those eggs in one basket for that. But I have about two hours between the 5,000 and the heats of the 1,500, so I should be OK. But I do plan to do lots of running on the nearby streets and trails so I can "run into" all those elite athletes. (In Eugene, it's almost a given that if you're running, you'll be passed by someone running 5:XX a mile, but even more so when big meets come to town.) I admit to being a diehard track groupie! |

She just tweeted that she had a workout yesterday so I'm guessing she isn't tapered and basically training through for the marathon. With her however one never knows. One of the events I'm most excited about is the men's decathlon. We have to potential to have a LOADED team (possible medal sweep at the Olympics). Let's hope there are no issues with no heights, etc. These are exciting times. Diving trials going on right now, swimming and track starting soon. Can't wait!!!! |

I would head down to the stadium - last time people were giving away tickets (especially to the prelim sessions.) Who knows you may be able to grab some. When I was there in 2008 I was running on Pre's Trail and Ryan Hall FLEW by me like I was standing still. He had already qualified in the marathon and was just doing appearances in Eugene so was in full training. It was insane. |

Rit'z 12:56.27 clocking in August of 2009 set the -admittedly small- world (of American distance running) on fire. And while Bobby's sense of humor relies heavily on intentional misrememberings of pseudo-celebrity names (“like how everyone has that one uncle that forgets names, ya know?”), nowadays, it would not be out of the realm of possibility for Ritzenhein's name to be botched by the moderate to serious track fan.
