Subject: No Wetsuit, 50 degree water, what do I do?

Hey All -

Swimming an olympic tomorrow, water is probably going to be around 55-59 degrees and I don't have a wetsuit.  The air temperature will be around 65 - Any thoughts on what I should wear into the water?  Could I just wear a long sleeve polypro/under armor type shirt even if it's loose?  Not racing to win it, but would love to not die post swim....

Thanks!!!

Philip C.

Can you rent one on site? Ive seen this offered at bigger races. I personally wouldnt do <60 degrees without a wetsuit for a mile.

I don't think that there is any normal clothing you could wear during the swim that would help you. Anything you put on is going to soak through immediately and be an anchor dragging you down as well as not doing much of anything for body heat.

I suppose you could do petroleum jelly on the skin - I know that people have used it for English Channel crossings, and such.

I was in this scenario last year - I just bought a wetsuit on-site, and now I'm enjoying it in the other races I've done since.

Is grab "a coffee and read the newspaper" an option?

X2 I would pass on the race without a wetsuit.

everyone is different.  If the water was 65, it would be a go.

55-59 is pretty darn cold for 1500m.  scrawny little me would easily go hypothermic and I know that I couldn't wouldn't shouldn't do it.

have you ever gotten into water that cold without a suit?

Thank you all!  Luckily many of you responded before the tri shop close to my house closed...ducked over and rented a suit for tomorrow!!  I was seriously considering doing this in a speedo...

SO glad I posted!!!

Unless you are used to it and know what to expect I would not do it without a wetsuit.  I would be concerned about cramping and not having the bouyancy of a wetsuit to get through it.  Your risk of cramping in those temps goes way up.

edit. just was you got a wetsuit.  good call.

55F is only 12.8 Celsius.

The translation is necessary because I just checked the "Triathlon Canada Competition Rules."  For water temperatures below 14 Celsius wetsuits are mandatory.  When water temperatures are below 13 Celsius the swim can be cancelled.  I did a triathlon on Sunday where the water temperature was 13.6 C.  As a result of this water temperature the Olympic event swim was shortened from 1500 to 750 meters.  (Swim is my weakest event - an Olympic triathlon with a 750 meter swim is my idea of a perfect triathlon.)

I think that these guidelines are saying that swimming in 55F water with no wetsuit is dangerous.

Don

There's no way I'd do one in water that cold without a wetsuit, and I was thinking the same as the poster above- that a wetsuit may actually be required... I just can't imagine swimming that long in water that cold without a suit!  Is there any way you could borrow or rent one?  Even a surfing wetsuit would at least keep you warm! Although they aren't ideal for swimming, I've seen triathletes using them.  Good luck!

Excellent!

55 degree water is very cold. Not to be attempted without a wetsuit. Do you also have an additional (neoprene?) cap, and earplugs (can be had from CVS). Those can be very useful in really cold water (tips I learned here on BT).

There's a dude here in redondo beach that does winter swims (-55 degrees) in a speedo. He's a lunatic though. Pretty sure he's Russian, and a pentathlete.

Glad to hear you were able to rent a wetsuit! I did a double-header tri in February. The first swim was a 750 in 59F water. It was FREEZING even swimming in my wetsuit! The second swim a few hours later was about a 150 or so in 61F water (I was doing the mini sprint with my 7yo daughter). My wetsuit was too wet to put on for the mini and it was extremely painful! Even though the swim was shorter, we were in the water longer due to my daughter wanting to wait for the dolphins to swim next to her (despite my urging her on, she threaded water for a while just waiting for dolphins). Good luck with your event and let's hope that the water warms up a little bit for you!

I'm glad to hear you got a suit. FWIW, I'm a fairly strong swimmer, and I wouldn't consider a 500m swim at that temp without a wetsuit, much less 1,500m.

60º is a far cry from 50º

I am surprise at all the people proclaiming that they wouldn't do it without a wetsuit.  Can, have and will do again.  If you don't have the money for a wetsuit don't worry about it, but spend a few bucks on some earplugs and maybe a neoprene cap.

At the races I've done with lakes in the 60 range a lot of people asked me "aren't you cold?" but none of them got in the water in their wetsuits and declared how warm they felt.

Wetsuits are for buoyancy. They aren't magically heated.

Wetsuits are allowed for warmth, they are touted for buoyancy.

You are correct, they are not magically heated, they are heated by your body affecting the small amount of water in the suit to a much greater degree than your body affects the entire body of water.

I don't know about swimming in 60 degree water.... the few times I have swam OWS in the winter in Houston were quite cold even with the suit on...

Huh?  So I take it you don't wear a jacket as they aren't magically heated either?  As above, wetsuits are for warmth and as an added benefit they add buoyancy.  Also, some races like B2B recommends/requires a wetsuit for their race (although I did see some folks without)

I would probably think twice about doing it without a wetsuit, but for comfort not safety reasons. I've swam for over a mile in water that temp without a wetsuit without any major issues. I did have some dizziness, but that would have been prevented with ear plugs.

In my experience the main issues you would have are getting an ice cream headache (double bag your head to prevent this), dizziness (wear ear plugs) and getting in the water (just suck it up buttercup). The hardest one for me is usually getting in the water.

Already this year I've done over 6 OWS of 40-60 minutes in water ranging from 59-68F, all without a wetsuit (in the interest of full disclosure I am pretty fat so I do have a built in wetsuit.).
