Subject: RE: Mike Tyson or Mohammad AliI’ll take the opposing view here and say that Tyson, in his prime, would win.
I think Tyson was as strong as some of the other heavyweights of that era (Liston, Foreman, etc. ), but could match Ali in terms of speed and defense. Tyson was a little heavier than Ali was, and Ali wouldn’t be able to move Tyson around the ring the way Douglas and Holyfield could. While Ali is underrated as a puncher, I don’t think he has anything in his arsenal that could match Tyson’s punching power. Also, Tyson was very effective against taller fighters, using his quickness to get inside the jab and attack the body.
Douglas was able to tie Tyson up inside, push him back up against the ropes, and then step back out of range, a technique that Holyfield used as well, but Ali lacked the strength and size to be able to do that.
I think Tyson would press the attack on Ali, and although Ali would be able to protect himself for a while, I don’t think he’d be able to sufficiently hurt Tyson before Tyson was able to land one of his devastating hooks or body shots, and it would be all over.
I saw an interview with Tyson and Ali once where Tyson said that Ali would win if they had fought in their primes, but I think he was just being deferential to his idol.
The one wildcard for me is that Ali was a master of getting inside people’s heads. It’s possible that he could anger or frustrate Tyson enough to put him off his game and win. But just skill on skill, I think Tyson wins.
