The 400 IM is one of seven events Phelps entered for the U.S. Olympic Trials that begin Monday at CenturyLink Center. In six of those events, Phelps could go head-to-head with Ryan Lochte, his friend and chief rival.
Lochte is entered in 11 events but likely won't compete in all of them. It's also doubtful that Phelps will try to make the U.S. team in seven individual events and also swim a leg on all three relay teams.
Some media outlets on Tuesday speculated that Phelps might make a run at double-digit gold medals and try to top his Olympic record of eight set at the 2008 Beijing Games. Meanwhile, no one was projecting 14 golds for Lochte or reminding readers that Phelps entered nine events at the 2008 U.S. Trials in Omaha.
Phelps scratched from three of those events — the 400 freestyle and the 100 and 200 backstrokes — and competed in only the first round of the 100 freestyle to get a mark (47.92 seconds ) that would lock in a spot on the 400 freestyle relay team.
