Someone here at work is a huge tennis fan.  So, we are watching tennis on the T.V. while we work.  Who-ever is playing now lets out a loud howl each and every time she hits the ball...  It's very amusing, then very annoying.  the volume on the TV is set low, so all you can hear is the howl...

She's emphatically hitting the ball. I do the same thing when I text Zilla. It helps, believe it or not.

It's Falconi vs Azarenka right now.  The blonde one is the howler....

That is the only name I could come up with that usually grunts on every hit.  I know the 2011 Wimbleton (sp?) club management were really against it and said it was taking people away from the game of tennis.

There are two parts to it.  1)  In some martial arts some masters teach the students to exhale with great force or "yell/grunt" a word or sound as you make contact.  Similarly in Tennis you are attempting to hit through the ball with as much force and control as possible.  You tend to use your core muscles as you make contact which will tighten up your abdomen (and diaphragm) and tend to force more guttural noises out.  Just like if you are trying to push a car from a dead stop, you might grunt while exerting all your effort.  Most people learn to exhale in a quieter manor, but some just embrace the grunt and go with it.  2)  It's a rhythm, concentration thing.  Athlete's can be creatures of habit (think baseball pitchers), so they have some "thing" that they do to keep there concentration and rhythm all in place.  This explains why some grunt even on a drop shot which is all finesse and no power.

Grunting is annoying.  Makes Tennis unwatchable.

Ever watch MMA fights.  Not a lot of grunting.

The Wimbledon management team must be a bunch of geniuses...tall, hot, athletic, gorgeous women are sweating and grunting...must be terrible on the ratings, eh?

When Monica Seles did it back in the '90's it was annoying...when Maria does it, it's just awesome!  Call me smitten!

You can pretty much blame Nick Bollettieri. Many of the young players who emerge from his academy are among the worst at grunting, or shreiking as the case may be. He goes on about "forceful exhalation" or some such crap, but they're trained to distract opponents. The desire to drive an icepick into your ears when watching/listening is ... a side benefit?

I don't know about you fellas, but when I'm watching the Olympics this year, when Australia's Stephanie Price is swimming...I will be closely listening for grunting.  If I find she's not grunting, I may overdub the audio with Sharapova's grunting for my listening pleasure...is that wrong?
