Regular 160 Albury, Australia | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group Thanks biker, much appreciated (even down here in Australia where it is FREEZING). Today my plan only requires a 14 min run, which I will do no problem (but I am still doing walk/run). |

Veteran 190 Citrus Heights | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group I'm in! I've been on here for 6 mo or so, and have completed a couple of Sprints and 2 shorter "fun" races, but I am TERRIBLE at logging my training. Maybe this will be a good thread/group for getting me to focus more, and share in the motivation of others! |

Champion 10019 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group Okay, kids. I could use a little boost today. I am supposed to do my long run for the week today, since I will be out of town this weekend and I think can only do a shorter run there. BUT, it's going to be 90 degrees! Of course, it's 90 degrees every day and I am too lazy to get up early. Please someone tell me I can do this today and not to put it off... I need to do this because I am running Ragnar in Napa Valley in September and I have to get the miles in to survive |

You CAN do this! Your posts have been such an inspiration for me (not in a stalker kind of way Trick I learned to help beat the heat is get my head wet before going for a run (walk for me). Looking forward to hearing how your run went. |

Summer definitely makes you less motivated in the heat, but you'll find your rhythm and won't notice after a few miles! I'm not a morning person either, but that is the only time I get to swim, so I went with the motto of do it for 45 days and it becomes a habit approach. Let us know how it goes! |

In fact, I wish I had seen this thread before I went for my ride today. It might have been enough to motivate me to do a second lap on the bike today. That was the original plan, but I wimped out as I came up to my driveway. |

Extreme Veteran 1150 Nisbet, PA | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group There's also these bandanas I use to keep cool on LONG motorcycle rides. It has "moisture beads" in it. Soak it a while before you plan to use it. You wrap it around your neck and as it evaporates it cools you. And it works quite nicely. I'll be planning to use these in my transition bag for both cycling and running. Historically, running has always been my nemesis, and it was because of overheating. Only time I EVER enjoyed running was in the rain. I suspect most people will be upset if it's raining on race day. Me, I'll be celebrating! |

I need to do this because I am running Ragnar in Napa Valley in September and I have to get the miles in to survive Too late for this to do any good today, but I always target early-morning hours for hot days. It's slated to be 105+ here today (granting we don't have your humidity, too), and I actually welcome those 5 AM alarms because I know it's not smoking hot yet! The other way to take hot-weather training days is as a checkpoint for how far you've come. When tough workouts get me feeling run-down, I can often get a motivation boost by taking the mindset of "Yeah, but just think about where you were at 6 months ago. You could NEVER have done this!" It sometimes can give me the ego-boost I need to see New Me achieving something Old Me would have quit on miles ago. Go get some, Grrrl! {ETA} Congrats on entering Ragnar! That event is on my bucket-list someday...(in my best Wayne Campbell voice) "She will be mine. Oh yes...she will be mine." Edited by Stillmanji 2012-07-12 11:17 AM |

Extreme Veteran 1150 Nisbet, PA | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group I don't have much of a plan as yet. I'm doing motivational walks with my wife each day of one mile to keep her going. Then I'm doing my tri training on my own after she leaves for work. As of yesterday that consists of M/W/F as a 2 mile walk and T/Th/Sa as a 4.5 mile bike ride. Actually, I want to double the bike to a 9 mile double loop starting next Tuesday. I was going to double the bike today but wimped out. I console myself with the fact that it was only my fourth bike of the season. But now that I've put it out there to all my "training partners" I won't be able to break weak. I'm waiting for my swimsuit to arrive so I can add swimming to the repertoire. In the meantime, I have started doing my physical therapy exercises for my shoulder. I've got a messed up rotator cuff from a disturbance I was breaking up at my prison. At that time I'm going to switch it up to three swims and three bikes, with walks seven days a week. I have to emphasize that phase because it is by far my weakest. It's the one I hate the most. I have planned my first tri to be the Blueman Tri on 10/13/2012. For a training plan I have taken the average times for my age group and am working toward those as my goals for each stage. I'm hoping to hit those averages around mid-September. If I can do that then I want to switch up my training to doing two events per day together and each event twice a week until the day of Blueman. Does that sound about right to y'all? |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group Hey guys. Training for my first tri in September but I'm thinking of doing one earlier just because I really want to. I'm not really training per a specific routine but a combination of ones that I've seen on here and read in books and can fit in with my life. I'm at the point in the training where I've established my base and now I'm starting to push myself. Last night broke 26m on my 5k time and just got a new (used) road bike a few days ago and am psyched on riding and seeing the difference in time between that and my old MB. |

That event is on my bucket-list someday...(in my best Wayne Campbell voice) "She will be mine. Oh yes...she will be mine." While it's too late for today, this is a great way to think about it. It IS MUCH NICER at 5 am! Next time. I actually going to do a short term boot camp class in August that starts at 5:45 and I am hoping it will get me on a schedule. Ragnar is awesome. This will be my fourth time, and my third unique location. I joined a team in Florida Keys (hooked up through a BTer) in January and it was so fun to travel and meet new folks. This time it's my friend's work connection for Napa. I highly recommend the experience, you can read my race reports. After the first I said "never again", but then I relented for the second and realized it had everything to do with my team and also my own expectations. Now I am into it |
