Master  2264    Sunbury, Pennsylvania |  Subject: If you're in air conditioning right now.....(like I happen to be) check your calendar. Right now, Badwater is underway in death valley. Karnazes just put a pic on facebook with 130 degree temp reading. I feel like such a pansy. |

Drove through Mojave this weekend on the way to a family reunion down at Big Bear...granted it was a few miles South of the Badwater course, but still... As I watched the temp display on the dash climb steadliy through the morning, I couldnt help thinking about those guys running. I tried to engage my wife talking about it...but it literally turned her stomach to think about. That race, in those conditions, is truly a monster. The good news is that they actually caught a little break from the heat wave that came through last week. If they had been running Thurs-Fri last week...it could have been worse. I understand the appeal of distance races,etc. but why do it in the extreme heat. This is horrible for ones body. Its like saying "Hey lets climb Everest during the coldest month so we can get frostbite and die" or "Hey lets plan a race through the woods during a forest fire so we can breath in a bunch of smoke and maybe we will keel over and die but that will make the race even better". |

Careful what you ask for. Someone might think this is actually a good idea. To the original question. I believe it has something to do with testing the limits of the body and mind and for some it is to be the best at defining those limits. They are drawn to it. It can't be helped. It's an obsession. Where most say, "I can't" is the moment when they press on putting one foot in front of the other a million times because they can.

Last week I saw 126 on my truck thermometer. I know thats over what it acually was because it was in the sun, but still sucks. It makes for great winters tho so while everyone else is worried about it being too cold to go out, Im outside! |
