Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question: Do you tip the "skaters" who bring your food out to the car at Sonic? If so, is it at the same rate you tip servers within a restaurant? I went with my two sons to a Sonic this past weekend for the first time and when the food arrived I wasn't quite sure if I was supposed to tip or not so I told the server to keep the coins and I gave her a buck. I hesitated because essentially we were getting fast food from a drive through, the only difference was they skate it out to the car....That and more restaurants seem to be going to a program of not allowing tipping (Noodles & Co. for example).. Anyway, what I gave her was far less than she was expecting by the way she reacted when she ran out part of the order that she forgot on the first trip... Anyway, just wondering what others do... |

![]() I give 'em a buck, sometimes two if I've got it in the change jar. Sonic's not exactly the 4 seasons. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That's what I was thinking. However when we got back to the hotel and my boys told my wife how things went, I got a lecture about being cheap... On the other hand, my wife never misses an opportunity to lecture.... |

![]() | ![]() I have struggled with this one extensively as I do like my cherry limeades. I don't tip at Sonic. Because I agree with the others who say it is just a drive through. And while I want to reward the young people for their skating abilities, McDonalds Employees show more skill not falling on their butts in their kitchen as they glide across a days worth of greasy nastiness. If you tip at sonic, it's a slippery slope. Pardon the pun... |

Yup, at the 4 seasons I sit down, they come to me, about six different people wait on me for various things and I rarely have to do much of anything before whatever it is I thought I wanted gets brought to my table. Quite the difference ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I always do a buck or a buck plus the change if I park and someone brings the food to me at Sonic. As for her forgetting part of the order on the first trip, she's probably lucky you gave her something at all. Most of the cars that shift would have stiffed her I'd bet. |

I actually tipped her when she brought the initial order out to the car... It was when she brought the bottle of water out she practically dropped it in the window and pretty clearly showed her annoyance by the way she said "have a good night" while skating away.. No biggie on the attitude, I just wanted to see what % others would do at a restaurant format like Sonic.. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I tip whatever is left over to round up to the next dollar so if it's $3.45 just keep the $4.
If I pay with a debit card I just give them a dollar. I usually keep some money in my ash tray of my vehicle.
That is pretty customary. No you do not tip them like a real restaurant since they aren't checking on you over an over again like a normal restaurant. |

![]() | ![]() Haven't been to Sonic in years, but when I did, they didn't include an area on the credit card slip where you could write it in (like a restaurant does) so I never did. I figured if the company wanted their employees to get tips that bad, they'd give me the option on the CC slip. Sorry, kids. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well I kind of look at it like this. They are not waitresses. They just bring out the food. Unless things have changed they get paid at least minimum wage unlike a waitress. So if I have left over coins I give it to them, if I pay by card or have correct change I don't. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I usually pay with my debit card and tip them a $1 if I have one handy. When I pay with cash, I'll have them keep the change. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's a fast food place, not a restaurant. The reason for tipping in restaurants is that the waitstaff don't make as much of an hourly wage and make it up in tips. Not so for Sonic. Therefore, no reason to tip. All they are doing is bringing the food to you, like any other fast food place. Do you tip at McDonalds? If not, what is the difference? On a side note: Do you tip when you pick up food to-go from a restaurant? |

YES. Those folks are making server wages. No. I have not dirtied a table, or used their space. In the time I am eating my meal, someone else could be eating at a table, and leaving a tip. If they are delivering the food to my house, I will tip. OTOH, I tip a minimum of 20%, and if the food is good, I prefer to eat at the restaurant, since I will be eating the food when it is most freshly served. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When I go to sonic I'm usually sitting at the table because I'm with the kids (they can't spill in the truck if they're not in it), or I'm working and a fire engine doesn't fit in the parking spaces. We usually get table service that's close to comparable to the wait staff at a "regular" restaurant, brings us our food, drink refills, etc. If the kid (usually young kid, HS age) is nice and working hard I'll drop a couple dollars for sure. |

(none of this applies if the min. wage hostess or shift manager or whatever takes care of the order, of course!) |

You are still getting restaurant quality food and service, and the server still has to "tip out" on that sale, regardless if you sit at a table or not. |

Hardly seems fair for you nor productive for the restaurant? I mean, Your employees are discouraged to provide take-out because it's punative? Crazy policy! I distinguish a difference between a menu / table dining in experience and someone handing you a bag of food. I will tip differently. I had no idea that the check for take out counted for declaring tips though. That sucks becuase you're obliged to put in the 15% (or is it now 18%) to management whether you got that or not. You can't simply say that you only got $5 in tip (or none) and declare that as income. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() O.k., judge as you wish. But sonic is a fast food restaurant. I don't tip fast food. At standard restaurants, I always tip, even if just picking up a to-go order. |

While most don't agree with me... I don't tip them at Sonic. I waited tables for many years during and after college. I would take the order, refill drinks, get napkins, clean the table, run the ticket, etc. and get $3. So I have a really hard time tipping someone who rolls out on skates and hands me a bag. Not to mention, I pay with my CC at the stand where I order, so I can't tip easily anyways (no cash on hand). |

That's just silliness! your server also likely does the packaging of the meal, and any sides/dressings/etc. just like in the restaurant they usually make the salads, soups, bread/toast, desserts. it takes them just as much time to serve a takeout (maybe more if tracking down the different containers is a pain) as an eat-in, although there is no table/refill to monitor after the food is "served." i don't think anyone would expect a 20% tip on that, but a few bucks go a long way. |
