Subject: Cross Fit Challenge
In light of the recent Cross Fit thread in the main forum, I thought I'd issue a cross fit challenge for anyone interested. If you read the post in the main forum, you'll see that I am not a die-hard crossfit fan like some people are, but I do agree that it can be a big benefit as a strength training workout, either from time to time, or regularly like some BTers are doing.

Here is the proposal. From July 1st to August 1st, each participant strives to meet the crossfit goals they have set for themselves. For some it may be 1 crossfit workout per week, for others, it may be the prescribed 3 on, 1 off on the cross fit website.

Note that the crossfit workouts are varied, intense, scalable and demanding. I do not belive they are a substitute for endurance and sport specific training.

Please refer to the main forum thread:
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

The cross fit website:
http://www.crossfit.com/

A men's health article with scaled down ideas:
http://www.mensjournal.com/healthFitness/0602/workout_20minutes.htm...

And a martial arts site with "big dawg", "porch", "puppy", and "buttercup" versions. Of course, you can make up your own scaled version of the workout of the day (WOD), or pick and choose any of the published workouts of the day to create as your own.
http://forum.brandxmartialarts.com/viewforum.php?f=16&sid=74059d7b8...

Also, an intense site at a gym I would be honered to workout in:
http://www.gymjones.com/

Anyone itnerested?

Reply with questions, intent, goals or questions about what goals to set. My thought is that I'll try to incorporate 2 scaled WODs through the months of July and August to replace my strength workouts as I will have limited access to workout gear aside from my bicycle and rock climbing gear.

GOod start...what are your goals? I'll stick with my 2 WODs per week starting July 1st. I will do one of teh most recent 3 posted workouts on teh CF website. Since they are 3 on, 1 off, 2 WODs per week should fit well by pickign one of the most recent 3.

I'll do it too....2x week. I planned on adding some strength training back in after BSLT 70.3, so this will be a good start.

It's still kind new and scary to me, but I'll commit to 1x a week to start and see if I can work up to 2x a week by the end of July.

I'm not gonna agree to do the WOD only because some of them have components I'm not sure about.  But I might make up my own WOD based on particular moves I need to work on.  Any guidance on picking good "overall strength" moves would be very helpful.

The majority of their exercises are chosen to be "multifunctional" as opposed to isolating single muscles. Since you're trying for once per week, You could just scan over the previous six workouts for that week and pick one that looks interesting. The site has a list of substitutions as well as videos for exercises you dont know.

Their whole emphasis is on continuosly changing the stress you apply to your body, so if you do it once a week, don't do the same workout each week.

Aloha CF challengers....  I've been doing variations of CF workouts in lieu of the BT plans the past 4 months and haven't really lost any of my ability to swim, bike or run long (for me that's OLY distance).  I'll commit to 3x week.

Way to go, let's keep this challenge rolling. Next week I'll compile a list of participants. When the challenge gets rolling on July 1st, we'll use the thread to post our workouts and improvments/comments. We could just do this weekly if it's too much of a task to post each one here (as well as your log).

Check it out...we got ourselves a sticky!

Adventure Bear: 2x/ week
Betyoursilver: 2x / week (bonus if 3!)
lengle: 3x / week
madkat: 1x July/ 2x ? August
per6594: 3x / week
Sebjamesm: 2x / week

Any ideas for accountablility?

We can use this thread to post workouts, or just post to our journals. We could each visit the log of the person in front of us (alphabetically) with Zev going to the beginning of the list for regular inspires, etc.

Anyone else want to play? THe chanllenge starts on July 1st, so there are 1 1/2 weeks to sign up/get psyched up!

Count me intrigued. Will I hurt myself if I do this? LOL

Well, you can if you want to, but you don't seem like that type...

Seriously though, yes, you could, but my personality doesn't let me push that hard. I have friends who hurt themselves no matter what type of workout they do. The possibility is there in the same way that you can hurt yourself doing Yoga...you know, like if your instructor says put your little toe in your right ear, but leaves out the part saying only to try of you are very flexible and it doesn't hurt. A good yoga instructor will have progressiosn leading to more difficult moves.

CrossFit in theory has this as well, but the "prescribed" WOD is really stiff and you could hurt yourself if you try to stick to it. So you need to be smart, start smaller & slower until you see how your body handles it. Of course, not everyone would agree with this, but that's they way I approach it!

Read the men's journal versions, I really like them a lot (much more sane) than the Rx'd WOD.

I believe I will add this to my very busy schedule and do 2 workouts a week and a third will just be a bonus. I think I will start tonight, since I did core last night.

 Peace.

I think I'll start a new thread each week (Cross Fit Week 1) so it's easier to find each workout and know where to post. If this thread stays stickied, I can post links to each thread. It just seems easier than scrollnig through several pages of posts by the time mid august rolls around.

So here is the current list of players:

Adventure Bear: 2x/ week
Akustix: 2x/week
Betyoursilver: 2x / week (bonus if 3!)
Brent1812: 2x/week
lengle: 3x / week
madkat: 1x July/ 2x ? August
OneWord: ???
per6594: 3x / week
Sebjamesm: 2x / week
runpuddrun: 2x / week
Zev: not stated...

Get your engines ready, cause the cross fit challenge has begun!!!

I'm going to have to bow out of the CF challenge. I'm starting my IM training this month under the direction of a coach, and I'll need to follow his plan to the letter.

I started doing CF about a month ago. It's working already. Cool that BTers are into it!

If it's not too late to join, I'm going to do all the WOD's posted (though I generally use the "puppies" workout from brandxmartialarts) this month since I'm not tri training at all, with the exception of July 1&2 since I was travelling.

Anyone notice cross fit affecting your B/R/S in either a positive or negative way? I have been on the cross fit bandwagon 6 days a week during my whole time in Iraq. Not too many places for the traditional Tri exercises. I'll be back home with the family in 3 weeks. Really miss my Tri family also. I finished todays P.t in 19:56, Curious how everyone else did.

Five rounds for time of:
20 Pull-ups
40 Push-ups
60 Squats
